Avatar: The last airbender‘s official YouTube channel announced on Friday that a new Avatar series is on the way, but the passive reveal did not provide details of the size of the show. The news came as part of an announcement of the station’s Earth Day weekend celebration, which will be a three-day event on the station starting April 22nd.
The Earth Day event will include original video, a live stream on each of the three days and “a new original series exclusively on this channel” the announcementwhich was quickly noticed by the fansite Avatar messages.
The only problem is, there is no word on what type of series this will be. It’s unlikely to be a full-fledged addition to the Avatar universe, but it would also be a bit of a surprise if the announcement says “series” in reference to a franchise known for expansive storytelling.
Regardless of what new avatar content is broadcast on the YouTube channel, it won’t arrive until the last day of the weekend celebration. Earth Day celebrations begin on Thursday, April 22nd and last for three days. The new series will debut live on Saturday April 24th and after its premiere, the Kanal said in a comment on the post.
No matter what this new series is, we know for sure that Nickelodeon isn’t done with Avatar. In February, the company announced the creation of Avatar Studios, a studio dedicated to the series. The studio’s first project, which production began this year, will be an animated feature film set in the Avatar universe.
Update (April 16, 7.30 p.m.): Polygon reached out to Nickelodeon for clarification, and was told we should expect a trailer for the new series and a formal announcement from the company on Monday April 19th.
Update (April 17th, 2:30 p.m.): An update to the YouTube page makes it clear that the series is a “new, fan-led original discussion series,” as opposed to a new animated series, as many fans have speculated.
