The Fire ring The speedrunning community is hungry for new exploits to crack FromSoftware’s open-world game, and may have just discovered one. As part of an ongoing $10,000 tournament, someone has found a way to displace the player character enough to walk on air and skip large portions of the recently released expansion. Shadow of the Earth Tree. It’s hard to believe, but the tournament isn’t even over yet, and the community has already found “the holy grail of DLC skip games.”
As first reported by GamesRadar+the glitch (dubbed Legasus), involves interrupting the animation of the summoning of the player’s ghostly steed, Torrent. Discovered by player Joo, the glitch can be triggered in a number of ways, including using the DLC’s perfume weapons or visiting a Place of Grace where players can rest.
If the player manages to interrupt the ascending animation at just the right frame, they can achieve a “limited weightlessness” effect, which simply allows the player to walk on air. The initial animation is not so much canceled as “paused” while the player performs another action. The latter is especially important because to maintain the Legasus effect, one must never sit idle.
There are actually a million limitations you should be aware of if you want to get Legasus up and running. read herebut the point is that once you activate the glitch, movement isn’t entirely free. You can only move forward or backward, and you always have to be doing something, like standing guard with your shield extended. If you’re idle, you’ll be sent back to the point where you activated the glitch, and of course, if you accidentally interrupt the effect somewhere else, you risk a fatal fall. Also, to turn around, you have to use a bow, aim in the direction you want, and then dodge in that direction.
Once you get it working though, you can get pretty far, and players have used it to get into areas like Shadow of the Earth Tree‘s Abyssal Woods (which apparently sucks) and skips sections in the process, which can be annoying. That’s because you can also “unload” Torrent, which will run the rest of the summoning animation and interrupt the glitch right where you are. This allows players to tactically position themselves to die and respawn near checkpoints.
The tournament that led to this discovery is organized by Distortion2one of the most famous speedrunners from FromSoftware’s catalog and a guy who was beaten Fire ring with nothing more than the ass of his characterThe competition, which runs until August 11, challenges other runners to Shadow of the Earth Tree under some barbaric conditions that select Distortion. The DLC must be completed at Rune Level 1 with weapons found only in the expansion, and players can only increase their Scadutree Blessing – a separate leveling system that is available in Shadow of the Earth Tree– one level for each boss fight won.
Yes, it is damn brutal, but it also seems to be exactly the kind of masochistic gauntlet that Souls runners love Given these initial results, it seems that the tournament has already achieved exactly what Distortion wanted and started a new race for cool technologies for the next big Fire ring Speed run.
