The latest update for Sony surprisingly good PlayStation Portal adds the feature that people have been wanting since before the handheld gaming device launched last year. Starting today, PS Plus subscribers can stream some PS5 games to their device via the cloud PS portal without console.
A year ago we got our hands on the PS portal And although it looked strange, it felt great and was a wonderful device that allowed people to play PS5 games anywhere in their house over Wi-Fi. The device, which costs $200, works flawlessly and is quietly one of the best things Sony has made in a long time. However, the portal’s only major flaw was that it couldn’t stream games from the cloud for some reason. You had to have a PS5 and using the portal allowed your PS5 to turn on and play your game remotely. This meant that the PS Portal was more of an accessory than a console. But that changes today.
On November 19th, PlayStation released the latest update for the PS Portal and while it offers some nice quality of life improvements in terms of sound settings, the real news is that from today players will be able to play a selection of PS5 games via the cloud and without a console. In theory, you can now play PS5 games on the go, provided you have a Wi-Fi connection.
According to Sony, after today’s update, over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus games catalog will be available to stream on PS Portal. The games include Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, Ghost of Tsushima, And Dave the diver.
How to stream cloud games on your PS Portal
To start streaming PS5 games on your PS portal Without a console, you will need an active PS Plus Premium subscription. Then you need to download the update and follow the steps below:
- Open the “Quick Menu” and access “Settings” in your PS Portal.
- Select the “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” button.
- Turn on the “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” switch (this is disabled by default).
Currently, Sony is calling this a beta test and not all features, like the record button and party chat, are supported in these streaming games on Portal. Likewise, Sony does not currently support PS2, PS3 or PS4 games or purchased PSN games.
Hopefully, after testing and further updates, Sony will expand support and turn the PS Portal into a badass PlayStation streaming device that lets you play all the classic games added to the catalog every month, as well as games you own. That would make me want to rush out and buy one PS portal.
