No better than 3, still fun

Sometimes we appreciate consistency and affordability over everything else in our lives. That's why I continue to buy and eat Burger Kings cheap double -cheeseburger. I know what I get, it is not expensive and it fills me. The Orks have to die! series2011 plays a similar role. The games are about killing thousands of orcs with traps, swords and arches. They never cost much, always solid and stuck to their uncomplicated, satisfactory formula quite close.

But the latest game in the series, Deathtrapshakes this recipe. And while it's not that Good previous gamesLike a double cheeseburger, the ketchup is missing, it still does the work and I still enjoy it.

Orks have to die! Deathtrap Is the fourth game in the series (No, we are not talking about this no longer existing free PvP spin-off) And once again you play as a warrior who can kill orcs with various weapons or magic directly. And once again these orcs are available in solid waves and funnel through Maze-like cards, which you can fill with fatal traps and barricades to create places that you all kill while you are ready and watch. In previous games they completed the levels in a defined order and reached the end of the game in this way.

This time, however, the game is more like a Roguelike and they replicate cards with random modifiers that are activated. You may have to deal with larger enemies, or you may not be able to revive co-op team members. Between waves of enemies, select a random bonus or an ability, such as additional damage that remains with you for the rest of this run. Runs consist of two or more randomly created missions and a harder boss fight with even more orcs and more places to set traps. By completing runs, you are brought in skulls with which you can update your traps or unlock new skills.

In theory, the random features should add the repetition of Deathtrap. The problem, however, is that in the past games, every new level has led to a new card, but here they play a lot on the same cards. In fact, you will probably play on the same cards a few times during a co-op session. And that, combined with the fact that you now have a limited number of obstacles (which can change where orcs travel), means that you probably every time you play them.

Sure, the modifiers can change that a little, but it feels like a grind. To actually hit the game, you have to make a lot of grinding to improve all traps and make your skills at the maximum.

Don't get me wrong Orks have to die! Deathtrap It's still a good time with a friend, and it is still very satisfactory to build a huge kill box with a dozen falling to massacre a horde of orcs in seconds. But I hope that a future Orks have to die! The sequel returns to the formula based on the level, while some of the Roguelian elements are exceeded by it. Like a good, cheap burger that does not lack the ketchup and is also improved with a little bacon or better cheese.

Orks have to die! Deathtrap is on the Xbox series X/S, PS5 and PC on January 28th. It is also available in the game pass on the first day.
