It’s incredibly rare to run into one Shiny Pokémon in Pokémon brilliant diamond and Shiny pearl. It is even more rare to meet two in a row in the same fight. In fact, several thousand times less often. But that’s exactly what happened to a Twitch streamer when they least expected it.
Mitchell “MitchOG” Versari was after a Shiny Turtwig, Pokémon BDSP‘s grass starter. When streaming for his viewers on Twitch, he kept restarting the game and waiting for the sparkling color variant to appear. He finally succeeded on his 107th attempt, but only after a Shiny Starly appeared next to him in battle. Players have one one of 4,096 Chance that your Starter Pokémon will be shiny the first time they appear. You have a one of 16,777,216 Chance that both the starter and the first Pokémon it battles are Shiny.
“What?” MitchOG continued to scream as he fell from his chair. “Happy damn Christmas boys!”
While Shiny Pokémon don’t have any special properties other than their sparkling appearance and significant rarity, it has become common practice for some committed players waiting for a Shiny to appear before seriously starting a new Pokémon game. But getting a double shiny encounter in the first few moments of the game is virtually unknown.
“I honestly couldn’t even process what I was looking at,” said MitchOG Kotaku. “It wasn’t until later that night after the stream that I realized I’d never seen anything like it before. I started looking online for others who found the inconceivable Shiny Starly and a Shiny Starter Pokémon at the same time, but I couldn’t find anything. “
The sparkling moment in the bottle came during MitchOG’s latest Challenge Run to beat it Pokémon BDSP only with a team of the first six Shiny Pokémon he can find. He previously streamed a playthrough where he beat the entire game with just one bidoof. In the long term, he tries to catch one of all the Shiny Pokémon in the current Pokédex in the series. It’s over 800 and he says he’s about halfway there.
In the meantime he has achieved something even rarer. To put the odds of what happened to them into perspective, the likelihood that a person will be struck by lightning in the course of their life is 1,000 times higher.
“I can safely say that I can retire from the brilliant hunt as the rest of my happiness in life was used up yesterday,” said MitchOG.
