This will not surprise any of you, but id Software officially canceled QuakeCon 2020 today, stating that "gathering is the last thing that any of us should do".
In a statement posted to the con & # 39; s site, the id said that the show – due out in August – can't be compiled yet. Even the limits on circles that had to be removed at that time, given the lock-in status now "will not be able to complete the work and planning with partners, vendors, volunteers, and others needed to make QuakeCon successful":
To all our friends in the QuakeCon community,
QuakeCon has always been a special event for us and us – a time when we come together to play games and build bonds that, for some, have made for a century now.
In recent weeks we have spent a lot of time talking about how we can improve QuakeCon this year, especially as it is the 25th anniversary of the event. However, with all the challenges and uncertainties we currently face as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, we made the difficult decision to cancel this year's QuakeCon. The health and safety of our staff, volunteers, vendors, sponsors and players will always be a priority for us, and at these times it felt unfair to talk about a gathering where reunion is the last thing any of us should be doing right now.
While we do not know what the disease will be this August, we know that we will not be able to complete the work and planning with the partners, vendors, volunteers, and others needed to make QuakeCon a success.
We thank you all – especially the volunteers – for all your efforts in building and supporting this event each year. We look forward to working with you to launch other ways to celebrate QuakeCon spirit this August, and look forward to the return of this amazing event next year.
Until then, avoid, take care of each other, and play games.
Peace, Love and Rockets,
id Software by Bethesda Softworks
So the show will be back next year, and in the meantime they will try to do something online, just like everyone else.
