Finnish studio Mopeful Games has released one of the biggest surprises of the year. It’s neither the worst nor the best of 2023, but it certainly comes as a big surprise. Fashion Police Squad is an FPS game with a 2.5D style inspired by the original Doom and a gameplay inspired by the Doom of 2016. However, what hasn’t been maintained is the violence of these games.
This will give us a new experience, since in the game you will not kill anyone. Instead, you will come across many people committing fashion crimes by dressing them up to make them look more elegant. Something they will thank you for later. Each enemy wears a different outfit, so you’ll need to use an appropriate weapon type. In this way, each fight is like a puzzle, because all the time you have to think about what weapon you are going to use. Similar to games like Doom Eternal, where each opponent has a weapon or ability that is particularly effective against them.

Puzzle battles in Fashion Police Squad are as much fun as they are challenging. Each encounter will keep you hooked, but in the moment of action you’ll be more focused on your weapon choice than the battlefield. The beginning of the game is pretty calm, with only two or three types of enemies at a time, but after that you have to juggle all kinds of fashion criminals in small scenarios where you have to move quickly horizontally and vertically. As in the Doom games, fast movement is key. You can move pretty quickly by gliding between bubbles, bouncing off umbrellas, and yanking your belt. In theory.
In practice, your movements seem a bit imprecise. Mostly he wanted to jump somewhere, failed in the end and had to try again, but this time more slowly and methodically. This is pretty annoying in the middle of a fight as it slows you down and you get stuck in a corner because you jumped wrong. But the worst are the platforms.

The game switches all the pacifist violence and jumps from A to B like Spiderman. Sometimes it works perfectly and you swing your belt quickly and smoothly. Most of the time, however, it doesn’t work well and breaks your rhythm, especially when you’re sliding on bubbles. I don’t know why this is happening. Maybe the developers didn’t work hard enough on it, or it’s just the style of the graphics that’s lacking in depth perception.
The graphics are pretty brilliant and all the enemies and weapons have a very fun design. Unfortunately, all of the settings are reused a lot, making it feel like almost every level is a copy and paste. But an FPS game is only as good as its guns. Out of five guns out there, four look pretty good. I find this amusing since an automatic sewing machine gun is more powerful than realistic automatic weapons from other games. But most of the sock drawers were annoying as they slowed down the pace of battles and weren’t very accurate to use despite their odd design.
Fashion Police Squad is very engaging and full of humor, so much so that he dares to laugh at himself. The developers know they made a silly game and know how to wear it. Throughout the game, the comedy remains lively and original and never gets boring. This is probably because the game ends before it gets too long. It gets a bit repetitive but is enlivened by some unexpected moments. Some of them work and some of them don’t. For example, there is one boss that is probably one of the funniest I’ve ever fought, while another was a pretty boring bullet sponge. The score for this game is a resounding seven out of ten. If you feel like playing something light and original, Fashion Police Squad is for you. But if it’s game of the year you’re looking for, you might want to dig further in your closet to find something that suits you better.
