Roblox is a game, Law? It ticks all the boxes, it’s obvious, we all know it is. Why, I wonder, has one of the world’s most popular entertainment service platforms suddenly stopped calling itself one?
How The edge report, last week Roblox removed almost all mentions of the word “game” from its descriptors, regardless of whether they were internal tabs (“games” now says “discover” in Roblox
A Roblox spokesperson has an explanation at hand, it says:
The term “experiences” is consistent with the evolution of our terminology to reflect our realization of the metaverse. Roblox
is an online community in which people do things together in virtual worlds. Over the years we have started to refer to these worlds as Experiences as they better represent the wide range of 3D immersion locations – from obbys to virtual concerts – which people can enjoy together with their friends.
Whatever, OK whatever, but timing of the move is certainly interesting It comes in the middle of the judicial battle between Apple and Epic where a large part of Epic’s case is an attempt to prove it Fourteen days is more than just a game
So Roblox– which despite some Apple reservations is may operate its own in-game store, as this is classified as an “app” and not a “game”.– Removing all mentions of the word “game” at the exact moment that we would all notice the timing is, if nothing else is very funny in a “My” Roblox is not a game “t-shirt that people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt.
