rogue squadronthe troubled Star Wars film, has been dropped from Disney’s theatrical schedule, meaning there is currently no Star Wars theatrical release in the pipeline.
The news came in a scheduling update sent to media Thursday afternoon that made changes to 11 Disney films that were or were scheduled to premiere between March 2023 and July 2024.
Patty Jenkins, the 2017 director wonder woman and its 2020 sequel was brought on board to direct a story that Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy said would be set in a “future era of the galaxy.” Filming was set to begin this year, with a release targeting Christmas 2023.
But in November 2021, The Hollywood Reporter reported that those plans had been delayed, citing scheduling conflicts and other commitments. Jenkins is involved in a third Wonder Woman film in pre-production for Warner Bros. about the Egyptian leader Cleopatra, written by and starring Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot.
For now, that means all of Disney’s Star Wars eggs are in its streaming TV basket. Lucasfilm has already premiered Boba Fett’s book
The latest Star Wars feature film is from 2019 The Rise of Skywalker which, while a commercial success, was still the lowest-grossing of the Sequel Triology and a critical disaster. His performance and a smashing reception for 2018 Solo: A Star Wars Story apparently caused Lucasfilm and Disney to reconsider their cinema plans.
Disney replaced planned theatrical releases for Kenobi and Fett with their Disney Plus adaptations. Movie projects attached at one point The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson and game of Thrones Showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss, while never officially planned or announced, are still in limbo.
