As I have discussed many, many times on this site, I don’t like horror gamesand so Difficulty enjoying even the best examples of the genre. There’s absolutely no way in hell I should enjoy it signaled as much as i am
Released on PC last week, signaled is a sci-fi horror game where you play as an android stranded on a strange planet full of secrets, empty buildings, strange monsters and… blood
I’m now going to do that annoying indie game reporting thing where I get reductive and compare it to other games so as not to dismiss everything cool and unique signaled but just to make it easier for someone who hasn’t played it to get one feeling Therefore.
Imagine the original resident Evil Play with their set perspective, inventory management, and easy puzzle solving. Now throw in some of a Alien Isolation or system shocks “Browse a cursed sci-fi space” appeal. Then present the whole thing in that absolutely filthy (and I mean it in the best way possible) PS1 aesthetic, with a healthy dose Tsutomu Nihei
It’s slow-moving, it’s brutal, it’s unnerving without venturing too far into sheer horror, and I absolutely love everything about it. I love the animation as your android carefully steps through the aisles or gently loads another magazine into your gun. I love the way the world design presents Japanese sci-fi with an East German twist. I love writing where the story develops in the traditional way, like “fragments of notes left around the world,” only to perfection. And me love
