There are certain games that have become so famous not released that it obscures almost everything else about them. Following such as Duke Nukem Forever And Half-life 3after years without news, without trailers, without nothing, Hollow Knight: Silksong has now become a prime example of gaming vaporware. But listen, what is this? Developer team Cherry has confirmed that the game actually still exists! After quite a bit of confusion.
This is what follows a bit of bruhaha last week after fans were desperately looking for something, anythingjumped on it Hollow knight Co-creator William Pellen updates his social media with a new name, username and picture, then tweets on January 16 that “something big is coming. Keep your eyes closed tomorrow.” Not exactly unreasonable, those looking for news wait for continuation Silk Song to the last six years thought this was the start of some kind of marketing campaign, the start of an ARG that would force them to analyze the changes, the new names “@everydruidwaswr”, “little bomey” and a profile picture of a piece of chocolate cake.
This of course coincided with the Switch 2 announcement, and again it would make a lot of sense to assume that this meant there would be a corresponding announcement Silk Song could be a launch game for Nintendo's next console. That's the starting point, and then the confirmation bias-based conspiracies began. As Eurogamer As mentioned, a reverse image search of the slice of cake resulted in a recipe dated April 2, 2024, exactly a year before the date of Nintendo's announced Switch 2 Direct… And yes, all those sorts of red coincidences.
However, it turns out –as originally reported by GamesRadar– it was all absolutely nothing. Hollow knight speedrunner fireb0rn spoke with Team Cherry's PR representative, Matthew “Leth” Griffin, and confirmed that this was all a misunderstanding.
This was then further confirmed by Leth in response to another X user.
“Yes, the game is real, progressing and being released,” Griffin told the desperate would-be player, giving us our first sign of life Silk Song since dinosaurs roamed the earth.
Of course, this isn't exactly useful information. But considering how shockingly quiet Team Cherry has been the entire time, it's better than nothing. The game was announced in 2019, and then almost nothing was heard from again until 2022. This summer it appeared in Microsoft's emergency E3 showcase, with confirmation that meant it would be released within the year. Come May 2023, It was made public that the game would no longer meet this schedulebut no further details were added. And since then there has been radio silence again. In April 2024, people were pretty excited as a store page and an ESRB rating were displayedto make sure it comes out at any moment, but look around.
“Is real” and “Will be released” aren’t exactly comforting words for the near-psychotic legions of fans desperately desperate to finally get to play Hollow Knight: Silksongthe sheer vagueness suggests that nothing will happen soon. Then again, Team Cherry has clearly been burned far too many times to be willing to commit to anything at this point, perhaps even if they were just days away from making an announcement. That means: shrug your shoulders.
In the meantime, why not give away the money that's burning holes in your pockets and souls? tiny indie teams Manufacturing amazing metroidvania games?
