The cinematic universe of GI Joe is back with a full reboot featured in the first trailer for Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins, which debuted during the MTV Movie Awards. The new film will follow the training and early battles of the deadly ninja Snake Eyes and likely show how he joined the GI Joe team.
The trailer keeps things extremely vague and only gives hints of the story the film might follow. We see Snake Eyes played by Crazy rich Asians Star Henry Golding when he appears to start training with the Japanese GI Joe Universe clan called Arashikage. With them, Snake Eyes learns how to become a ninja warrior and keep peace in the world. But we don’t get a lot of details about what might threaten that peace.
Instead, the trailer is full of quick but short takes of action scenes, such as car chases on a motorway motorcycle, a sword fight on the roof in the rain, and a hand-to-hand fight. We also get gigs from a member of the Cobra called The Baroness, played by Úrsula Corberó Money robbery
Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins is an entirely new beginning for the series’ theatrical universe. The previous large-screen versions of the GI Joe universe had two films: 2009 GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra and 2013 G.I. Joe – Billing. Neither of the two films managed to be a box office hit or be particularly good. So Paramount decided to retool the series and start over.
Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins should hit theaters on July 23rd.
