Sonic the Hedgehog 3 came out in theaters at the end of December and has already earned more than its worth $380 million worldwide. That's impressive enough! But on the weekend Sonic3 has achieved something only another video game film has ever done: it has now grossed over $200 million domestically.
As discovered by GameSpot on January 13thon the second weekend of the month, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 reached $204 million in North America. Historically, video game movies often fail at the box office, and even bigger hits like that resident Evil Films regularly perform better outside the US and Canada. But Sonic3 beats the odds and is now the second video game adaptation ever to earn more $200 million domestically. The first to achieve this feat was The Super Mario Bros. movie in 2023.
Even reaching $100 million domestically has traditionally been a struggle for video game films. Only 10 video game movies included Sonic3ever managed that. These films are:
- The Super Mario Bros. movie
- Sonic the Hedgehog 3
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Unexplored
- Pokémon: Detective Pikachu
- Five nights at Freddy's
- Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
- The Angry Birds movie
- rampage
Sonic3Paramount's success is a big reason why Paramount has already greenlit a sequel, set for release in 2027.
While Sonic3 is doing well at the box office and is expected to cross the $400 million mark worldwide next weekend, it is still far from being able to keep up with the competition Super Mario Bros. Film. This animated film, although it's a pretty forgettable adventure starring Chris Prattrevised $1.3 billion worldwide. It grossed a staggering $575 million in North America. So yes, Mario beats Sonic. Don't worry, the blue blur and Sega are used to it. It's not the first time and it probably won't be the last time either.
But hey, at least that sound Films are interesting films with their own identity and with wonderful performances from people like Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz. I'll take a look at this sound movies again. I'd rather eat sand than watch Super Mario Bros movie again. That's something to be proud of!
