We’ve seen Sonic the Hedgehog Play with free roaming hub areas but a completely open world sound? It’s a whole new animal. Ready or not, here comes Sonic Frontiers, which Sega calls Sonic’s first “open-zone-inspired gaming experience”. Check out the first trailer as well as a few screenshots of its huge, fully explorable areas.
First teased at the Sonic Central event in May, Sonic Frontiers is the big new game that Sonic Team, led by producer Sachiko Kawamura and director Morio Kishimoto, has been working on since 2017 Sound forces
In case you’re missing the whole open zone idea, Sega also sent a series of screenshots with the officer Sonic Frontiers Announcement, none of which includes the title hedgehog. We have a nice shot of a lake under a waterfall.
Then there is a field of wildflowers that I found particularly adorable. I wonder if Sonic will stir up brightly colored petals as he speeds through town.

And then we have these pretty ruins that suggest Sonic found himself in a world that was once home to an ancient civilization.
What I don’t see is an increase in random loop-de-loops, green grass over brown checkerboard filth, or any signs of a huge inconvenient casino that doubles as a death trap. I’m not saying these things won’t make it into the game, just that I don’t see a place for them in these screenshots. Maybe Sonic needs a dose of “reality” right now. After decades of digging through carefully crafted courses, it may be time to see what he can do in the real world. It worked for the film, didn’t it?
Sonic Frontiers is scheduled for release in late 2022 on current and last-gen consoles. Look for more information in the coming months.
