Today, Sony announced that Housemarque had officially become an in-house studio.

“Housemarque has expanded its creative palette over the years to include a wide variety of PlayStation games that have continually demonstrated the capabilities of our hardware,” said Jim Ryan, head of Sony Interactive Entertainment, in a written statement. “The addition of Housemarque to PlayStation Studios reaffirms our commitment to nurturing the best development teams in the industry and delivering new experiences that can only be found on the PlayStation platform.”

The relationship between PlayStation and Housemarque is going back on Super Stardust HD on the PS3.

Housemarque out too Resogun and Nex Machina, but in 2017 the Finnish studio announced the days of their arcade-style game development were over due to lackluster sales.

More recently, Housemarque has been published return on the PlayStation 5, a game that really feels like a PS5 game and takes advantage of the advanced haptic feedback from the new controller for some very realistic rain– which even caught my eye Kotaku‘s preview.

On the PlayStation blog, Co-founder and CEO of Housemarque, Ilari Kuittinen, discussed the move to officially become a PlayStation studio. Kuittinen wrote:

We are very excited to finally join the PlayStation Studios family! This gives our studio a clear future and a stable opportunity to continue delivering gameplay-centric approaches while experimenting with new methods of narrative delivery and pushing the boundaries of this modern art form. On site here in Helsinki, this also means that we are officially expanding the PlayStation family into a growing industrial center and safeguarding the legacy of Finland’s oldest game studio.

After all, what does that mean for our fans? At Housemarque, we are gamers, and we grew out of the need to perfect and craft the facets of games that we found most fascinating. We are also not known for running our own course and trying new combinations. With the support of SIE and his studio family, we can really grow into our position in the industry and show what Housemarque can do without restrictions. We can’t wait to show everyone what’s in store for us in the years to come, and hope we can bring lasting memories and exciting titles to life for the next quarter century and beyond.

Details of the transaction, including terms, were not disclosed. However, according to Sony, the current management of Housemarque will continue to conduct day-to-day operations together with the external development team from PlayStation Studios.

Update – 8:34 p.m. ET, 6/29/21: Sony may also have just acquired Blue Point Games. In a now-deleted tweet announcing the takeover of Housemarque, PlayStation Japan inadvertently posted an image of the studio behind the Demon souls and Shadow of the colossus Remakes with the words “Welcome to the family”.
