Foam stars is the upcoming competitive online shooter from Square Enix that many people and publications (My city included) are referred to as a Splatoon clone or Splatoon-How. Apparently Square Enix is bored with us all comparing its foam shooter to Nintendo’s popular ink shooter.
Announced last summer Foam stars is an online shooter exclusive to PlayStation 5 that pits two teams of four against each other, shooting p ink and teal foam (depending on team affiliation) at each other until one character is completely trapped and then bounces off the stage. When it was revealed, everyone had the same thought: Oh, that looks a lot like it Splatoon
In an interview with VGC, Foam stars Producer Kosuke Okatani was asked if he gets bored when people compare the two games. According to the outlet, Okatani laughed and replied, “First of all, yes!”
“There have been a lot of comparisons online,” Okatani said, “but we’ve also seen on social media that people are doing this.” Strictly speaking I played it and saw that it was a completely different game.”
The producer went on to explain that, in his opinion, “the mechanic of having the things you shoot at stay in the arena throughout the game” is “very unique.” He told it too VGC that it would be an honor if fans of Foam stars And Splatoon eventually created a nickname for the strange genre.
When Square Enix was asked by the publisher to actually provide a genre name, it eventually offered: “online party shooter.” Good enough, I think. I would prefer something like Inkfoamers or Foamsplatters.
will Foam stars find a player base?
Elsewhere in the interview, Okatani acknowledged that the biggest risk to Foam stars is not compared with Splatoon or people making too many jokes about bodily fluids, but that it’s a PvP game that needs a lot of people playing it all the time to be successful. And this is at a time when… Fortnite, Warzoneand other free-to-play shooters are at the top of the charts. Help Foam stars Successful, Square Enix takes over Rocket League/Fall Guys
Rich Briggs, executive director of publishing strategy at Square Enix, said VGC He hoped the PS Plus deal would help the game quickly build a community and player base.
“It’s an important part of how we build the Foamstars community from the start – ensuring the entire PS Plus install base can access the game for free for a full month, and you can keep it for that long.” “You have a valid subscription,” Briggs said. “If we get these players to experience it, that becomes our community in the long run. This really big start just felt like an easy win.”
It’s also an easy way to get lots of people to try your shooter and stop making it Splatoon and make jokes about it. The question is: Will people actually stick around and keep playing the game after it releases on PS5 via PS Plus on February 6th? That remains to be seen.
