The opening shot of Alan Wakethe 2010 action adventure horror remastered relatively recently, in 2021, finds us around a gloomy mountain pass. As we watch spruce trees come and go and the orange sunset fade to chalky mist, protagonist Alan Wake says the following off-screen: “Stephen King once wrote, ‘Nightmares exist outside of logic, and explanations are little fun.’ ; They are at odds with the poetry of fear.’
“In a horror story, the victim keeps asking, ‘Why?’ But there can be no explanation, and there shouldn’t be,” Wake continues. “The unanswered mystery is what sticks in our minds the longest and what we will remember in the end. My name is Alan Wake. I’m a writer.”
That’s how I usually introduce myself. But Alan Wake could never have capitalized on this momentous launch if Stephen King hadn’t himself sold the rights to his offering to developer Remedy for just $1.
Remedy Creative Director and Alan Wake Writer Sam Lake told Eurogamer So at the Summer Game Festbefore his appearance Tribeca Festival.
“Create the original Alan WakeI really, really wanted a quote from [Stephen King] to start it off,” Lake said. “From what I understand he wanted $1 for us to get the rights to use it.”
Lake called the award “very generous”; my city contacted Remedy for more information on the affordable offering.
The quote that finally made it Alan WakeThe intro is from 2008 Weekly entertainment Essay that King wrote about “Why Hollywood can’t make horror.”
“Horror is an intimate experience, something that happens largely within yourself, and when it works, the screams of a packed house are almost intrusive,” King wrote. His ethos translates well to solitary horror experiences such as Alan Wakeand so you can see his influence throughout the game, especially in his numerous references To The glow.
Alan Wake 2which my city Editor-in-Chief Alyssa Mercante said: “[doubles] after their time with a practical demo, could continue the homage. We’ll find out on October 17th when it releases for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
