Like many other people around the world, streamer xQc bet on the World Cup final tonight. However, unlike many other people, he claims he threw down half a million dollarsthen publicly boasted about it before kick-off.
Here is the recording:
(Note that xQc has been embroiled in the controversy over Twitch’s decision to ban gambling on the site, in large part due to partnerships like the one between xQc and Stake, the company involved in this bet)
His bravery was understandable! I loved the Messi narrative as much as the next football fanatic, but seeing France put my two teams (Australia and England) in the sword with no sweat – and while stars like Benzema, Pogba and Kante were absent – made their march to a second consecutive World Cup victory somehow feels inevitable.
But no! After one hell of a final, Argentina survived first a comeback from Kylian Mbappe and then a nervous penalty shootout to emerge victoriouswon her third World Cup final and first since 1986. Her squad is full of great players, from wily veteran Angel Di Maria to beloved shithouser Emi Martinez, but the real star (and focus of the entire planet’s media) was of course Lionel Messi. The best player in the world for the last 15 years, the only thing missing from his trophy case – and for certain people, his place in the absolute all-times sizes– was a World Cup triumph, so it was wonderful to see him cap off what will surely be his final season with a win.
Despite it! I’m not here to give you a synopsis of the game, I’m just providing context as to why betting $500,000 on France to win is called a bet and is not a sure bet.
Here is the pursuer.
At least he took it well! It was indeed an all round good game and a fun watch. Especially for those of us who watched it for free.
