Super Smash Bros. Ultimate stans had an exciting weekend when SmashConan annual tournament dedicated to Nintendo’s popular crossover contenders (and clones like Nickelodeon All Star Brawl) ended on August 14. There were many surprises, including one of the world’s best players, McLeo, fifth place in the singles bracket of the tournament. But what’s melting the competitive community right now is one player being named one took home first place Steve out Minecraftand now a lot of people want the character to be banned from future tournaments because he’s so broken.
Onin is relatively new to the scene, having made his tournament debut at The Online Olympus II in January 2021, after which he has continued to appear at various tournaments, even taking first place at Combo Breaker 2022. The smashed Wiki now considers Onin to be one of the best Steve players in the world, and he’s built up quite a body count. In past tournaments he has beaten MkLeo and puzzle, the best Canadian player in the world. He also defeated the Ice Climbers veteran Big Das well as the best peach player, MuteAce. Basically, Onin is a billy goat. And then, at the grand finale of SmashCon this weekend, they even got a body masterthe world’s top Game & Watch user and a current top 3 Mexican Smash Ultimate Player. It was a brutal flogging say the least.
Onin chose Steve as their main player, while Maister alternated between Game & Watch and Sora. However, it almost didn’t matter who Maister chose, because Onin won quite decisively. While Maister managed to beat Onin as Sora once – which caused the crowd to erupt in cheers and confetti – Onin walked away victorious, wiping the floor with Maister.
Still, the crowd was on Maister’s side the whole time. Although Onin dominated the duel, the audience chanted “Let’s go Maister” and “Let’s go Sora” to cheer on Maister. The crowd even yelled Sora’s spells in unison – Fire, Thunder, and Frost – whenever Maister cast them. And as the tournament reached its climax, the community jokedtweet their utter contempt for them Minecraft miner. Many people Yes, really hate steveso much so that you want him banned from the competitive scene.
The discourse on Steve’s suspension from competitive tournaments lasted a minute but came to a head two months ago as the Japanese champion acolyteanother Steve player, won The Gimvitationala major Smash Ultimate competition in June. Casual and professional smashers alike were pissed because acola, who dominates the Asian scene, came to North America and beat the top competitive players.
That was part of it. But the real reason people were crazy about awards was because Steve is universally considered be totally broken. With his solid zone tools and limitless combo potential, not to mention long range and excellent kill power, Steve is frustrating to fight. That, coupled with the fact that this year’s SmashCon tournament featured at least nine different Steve playersadded more fuel to the fire. People literally can’t stand this character.
my box has reached out to Maister and Onin for comment.
Unfortunately, as they are used to, some players throw copious amounts of hatred at Onin. From booing at the tournament to tweeting that they suck to sending out threatening messages, Onin is now on the receiving end of some seriously toxic gamer shit. It’s a shame to see, especially considering this player has only won one tournament with one available Smash Ultimate Character. There’s no reason to be so spiteful. You can hate the character, but don’t turn that hate on the player. It’s unnecessary and wrong.
