As part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new take on the DC Universe, a new Superman movie is finally on the way. Safran and Gunn, who are now co-bosses of Warner Bros. DC Studios have announced a list of 10 projects (including two Batman films) that will kick off the new DCU Superman: Legacy in 2025.
We don’t have too many details about it though Superman: Legacy Here’s everything we know about the Man of Steel’s latest foray into film.
Henry Cavill will not play Superman
The former Superman who began his tenure in 2013 man of SteelHe has finally hung up his cloak and will not be returning as Superman for Gunn’s new film. While we’ve known this since December 2022, we still don’t know who will take the mantle next. Gunn has teased that it will be a younger version of Clark Kent, although he will already be old enough to work at the Daily Planet.
What is Superman: Legacy about?
Aside from the teen-heavy approach to the film, Gunn says his way into the Superman story focuses “around Superman’s legacy — how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas peasant parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”
James Gunn is directing and writing the film
Gunn does the scripting for Superman: Legacy, which should enable him to set up his new DCU the way he can. His role as writer clearly makes this a different project from the film JJ Abrams previously developed with Ta-Nehisi Coates, which is reportedly still in the works as a DC Elseworlds film.
Gunn will also direct the film he announced in March after initially being undecided about taking on the role. In a series of tweets about his decision, Gunn explained that he initially rejected Superman years ago because he didn’t feel he had a path into the story that felt unique. And even after finding his way into the script, Gunn wasn’t convinced he should write the film. In a tweetSaid Gunn, “Just because I’m writing something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to direct for over two years, especially something of this magnitude.”
Finally, after a little more persuasion, Gunn decided to direct the film himself because he liked the script so much.
This will be Gunn’s first directing project after 2023 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3and since then his first film in the DC Universe suicide squad in 2021.
When will Superman: Legacy be released?
Superman: Legacy is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. This appears to be the first of the new DCU projects to be given a release date, and even released early The Batman part 2scheduled for release on October 3, 2025.
