With Eternal, The MCU is moving to a cosmic focus, away from just Thanos, and towards a new group of galactic weirdos, including the Celestials.
But in the Marvel Comics, Thanos and the Eternals have a strong bond that could chart a new course for the next phase of the Marvel movies. After a Eternal Silently connecting the post-credits scene, let’s talk about how Thanos intervenes in Phase 4 even after his story seemed to have ended.
[Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for Marvel’s Eternals.]
Thanos’ Eternals line
In the comics, Thanos is an Eternal and one of a very important bloodline: his father Al’ars was the son of Kronos, who ruled the Eternals of Earth after a civil war that divided the original colony. After his father’s death, Al’ars traveled the universe as a mentor.
This led him to Titan, the moon of Saturn, and his own group of Eternals. There he discovered that the entire planet had been decimated in its own eternal civil war with a survivor – the Titan Eternal Sui-san. Using a genetic device, the two rebuilt titans and populated it with new eternal beings called titans; they were stronger and could live longer than the original Titan Eternals, but were still outclassed by the Earth Eternals.
After all, Sui-San and Al’ars had two children of their own: Eros (we come to him) and Thanos.
Not an eternal one, not yet a deviator
Thanos is an Eternal, yes, but he is also a deviator. Why? Because genetics!
You see, Eternals and Deviants are made from the same batch, and that means there will be some overlap at some point. An Eternal who got a Deviant-like mutation was later referred to as “Deviant Syndrome,” or what Thanos looks like with his purple skin and furrowed chin. (Of the two sons, he’s the only one with this condition; Eros looks like a normal Eternal, something Thanos naturally hated his brother for.) And because the malevolence of the deviants is related to their biology (huh), Thanos’ looks freaky Sui-san looked so much that when she saw him for the first time after giving birth, she went mad and tried to kill him (also yikes!).
In the stream Eternal While fleeing from Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribić, the genius Phastos discovered that Thanos is indeed a “true Eternal One”, just like the rest of them. It is not clear what this means for the future figure; The next arc of Gillens and Ribić’s run will continue Thanos’ s tory, where he is called “Eternal prime number
Let’s talk about eros
Created by Jim Starlin and first published in 1973 Invincible Iron Man # 55, Eros is Thanos’ younger brother. With good looks and the power to control other people’s emotions, Eros is both the superhero named Starfox and a massive fuckboi. When he wasn’t helping the Avengers in a crisis, he was hedonistic as hell in space.
Like many fictional brothers, the two do not like each other, and Thanos will often only capture and torment Eros. They get along well sometimes: they had to work together once to defeat Thanos’ future self, and they have a truce to meet once a year and bring gifts to one another.
What does this mean for the MCU?
Eternal ‘ The first scene after the credits shows Thena, Makkari and Druig on their ship when they discover that Sersi, Phastos, Kingo and Sprite have been kidnapped by the heavenly Arishem. Before they can formulate a plan, they are interrupted by none other than Eros, played by Harry Styles. Eros was explicitly introduced as Thanos’ brother by his buddy Pip (Patton Oswalt) and offers the Eternals to save their friends. And his Fickboi nature seems to be intact, since his introduction to “Feels like the first time“And he flirts with Thena.
Since the film ends with the standard “Eternals will return …” promise, Eros is probably there too. If this film is successful, it is possible that Styles for a Eternal 2, and maybe even his own movie or show. (Sure, his absence from the entire Infinity saga is significant enough for both of them.) How he connects with the Celestials and his overall purpose in the MCU remains to be seen, as does whether or not Thanos will reappear for another Marvel sibling spit. Either way, the Eternals have a new ally against the Celestials. One that will undoubtedly give you some trouble in the end.
