The 11 Best Final Fantasy Spinoffs, Ranked

Square Enix / Roland N

The evergreen Mysterious Dungeon The series has taken many forms over the years, dating back to 1993 when Chun Soft created the roguelike Taloon’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon Away from its more traditional role-playing game Dragon Quest IV. Since then, we’ve seen original characters, Pokémon, and yes, Chocobos join in the fun of exploring dungeons.

Well, potential fun. These roguelikes aren’t for everyone, as moment-to-moment gameplay feels simplistic coupled with sometimes stressful difficulty settings (if you die, you tend to lose all items). The chocobo Sub-series that started with PlayStation 1997 Chocobo’s dungeon and the 1998 sequel is less punishing than many Mysterious Dungeon games, but Western reviewers felt the series was cool at the time.

Nevertheless, the Mysterious Dungeon The series is not celebrating its 30th anniversary this year for nothing.

It has its fans, and only 10 years after the first one Chocobo dungeon, Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo’s Dungeon for Wii received a much more positive reception, as did the subsequent remaster of that game on Switch and PS4. Love them or hate them, dungeon digging chocobo are here to stay. — Alexandra Hall
