Deep Rock Galactic Is one of my favorite games of the last few years. In the middle of the dreaded pandemic, I revived my relationships with my closest friends in the world about games like this and left 4 Dead. Cooperative first-person shooters in which you are exposed to endless attacks from enemies are simply a wonderful recipe for the greatest gaming fun imaginable, and Deep Rock Galactic takes full advantage of this vein. You are dwarves sent on hellish expeditions to mine resources for an obviously terrible enterprise, and I love how much Deep Rock Galactic feels like it was made like a workplace sitcom. You have a nightmarish day in the mines, but when you get back to your base, there’s a bar where you can all drink and dance, and there are little secrets and games hidden throughout to keep you busy while you have a late night chat with your friends.
Aside from that, Deep Rock Galactic is one of the most accessible live service games, with an extremely welcoming and goofy community that shouts “Rock and Stone” at each other as they pass by. There’s a seasonal model, but each season is completely free, and the developers have even made it possible to go back and unlock every Battle Pass that has come and gone. The game is also incredibly deep, offering four different character classes with their own weapons, tools, skill trees, and customization options. And if you want to be extra tough, you can always increase the difficulty of your missions or go into endgame dives. Deep Rock has something for everyone and is a real bargain at only around $10, although it is also available on Game Pass.
