IDWs Metal Gear Solid The board game was discontinued in 2021 after several delaysand then it seemed that’s how it was. But no! It was announced this week that the game is back, but now it’s being published by competitor CMON instead.
It’s quite a lot the same game with the same designer –Emerson Matsuuchi – the only thing that seems to have changed is the company name on the box, the design of the box itself, and the fact that it’s actually coming out now.
Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game is structured exactly as you would expect: it is a turn-based tactical stealth game in which the players work together to sneak around and destroy levels Villains, hide corpses and, yes, move around in a box.
In Metal Gear Solid: The Board GamePlayers will take on the role of iconic characters from the video game, such as Solid Snake, Meryl Silverburgh, Gray Fox and Hal “Otacon” Emmerich, and work together to complete missions and defeat the bosses.
Each character has unique gameplay characteristics and adds something different to the team:
Snake focuses on stealth attacks, Meryl can disguise himself and slip past patrols unnoticed, Gray Fox starts the game with his signature weapons like his high frequency blade, and Otacon has a unique hack deck available only to him.
With unique skills, passive abilities and a variety of familiar actions, such as knocking on walls to attract the attention of enemies or stealth killing, each player will have a distinctive and immersive experience playing with the different characters .
There are six standalone missions for players to complete, or if you have time there is also a 14-mission narrative campaign. Plastic mini lovers should know that in addition to miniatures for smaller, human characters, there is also a giant Metal Gear Rex.
The game can be ordered direct from CMON for $100, with an estimated shipping date of May 2024. Later copies of the game will not feature the Metal Gear Rex or a “Fully illustrated 109-page graphic novel, illustrated by Kenneth Loh, bringing each campaign mission to life.”
