It seems as if every time Konami releases the upcoming Silent Hill 2 New editionSomething is wrong with the fans. It started with the announcement of the game, when it was revealed Layers of fear And The medium Developer Bloober Team would be leading the remake of the groundbreaking survival horror title that failed to inspire confidence among many fans. Now that new footage has debuted during the recent PlayStation showcase, Game StatusFans are upset again – this time over the character models, which may or may not discredit the original designs, depending on who you ask.
During the silent Hill In Transmission, the short presentation that immediately followed State of Play on May 30, Konami showed us 13 minutes of gameplay from the remake. In it (and in the State of Play trailer) we see protagonist James and supporting characters Maria and Angela. Let’s start with James, since he’s our main character. Fans of the redesign point out that it looks significantly better than when the remake was first revealed.
Those in the dissenting camp, however, point out that James’ new design looks a little familiar – he has a Leon Kennedy He has a great charisma, right down to his curly blonde haircut, which just feels a little odd compared to the original game.
And then there’s Maria, a character James meets throughout the game who is known for her confidence and overt sexuality. Fans have criticized her new outfit, which is decidedly more demure (and, to be honest, less fashionable).
As people familiar with the original game have pointed out, Maria’s costume design is extremely important to her character as well as some of the larger narrative aspects of the game. What’s disappointing is that Bloober doesn’t seem to have attempted to recreate the outfit’s iconic details in a modern way, ditching the leopard print and gold jewelry in favor of a boring black dress and jacket that appears to be the same pink color as the original outfit. As many have said, she just doesn’t serve in the remake and that feels like a misstep. Even more confusing is that the brief glimpse of Return to Silent HillA film adaptation of the second game, which is also in production, showed that Maria will wear her original outfit.
But the biggest backlash regarding the footage from the Silent Hill 2 The remake focuses on Angela, a 19-year-old girl whose path also crosses with James’ in Silent Hill as they both search for their missing loved ones. Some players say she looks eerily and strangely different, and that her face has lost something hard to place that was present in the original game. But the outcry is mostly centered on a few screenshots that show Angela from an unflattering angle.
Of course, there is a vocal minority who claim that Angela is ruined because she woke up and was forced to DEI (or Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the latest buzzword among reactionaries). It is an unfounded claim that all too often in today’s gaming and deprives true fans of the series of any chance to discuss the merits and demerits of the remake.
While the remake slightly changes her design with an updated facial model, Angela seems to be the character that gets the least revamp. Her outfit and hairstyle remain remarkably unchanged, unlike Maria and James. Aside from the screenshots circulating online, she looks fine. However, some argue that minor changes to a 19-year-old video game character are a grave insult, hurling horrible insults in the process.
The redesigns look good! I find Maria’s the most disappointing as she has changed before, but this is all indicative of gameplay. We will have to wait for the Silent Hill 2 To really see how Bloober Team’s vision compares to the original, the remakes will be released on October 8th.
