The D&D Movie’s Villain Revealed (And No, It’s Not Vecna)

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among ThievesThe latest trailer came out on Monday and lifted the veil on the film’s big villain. And while fans of stranger things or Critical Role might think they have the edge in this case, Chris Pine and co. do Not Battle against a lich named Vecna.

In an interview published by IGN On Monday, co-directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein announced the film will star Red Wizards of Thay leader Szass Tam. Tam is in addition

a lich – just like Vecna, the villain in it stranger things and the Vox Machina storyline from Critical Role. But Tam has a very different story that also appears in a number of novels Forgotten Realms: Enchanteda second edition campaign released in 1995.

In D&D lore, a lich is a wizard who has transcended mortal life through the dark arts of magic to become a powerful undead creature. According to Forgotten Realms Wiki

Tam got the job done by killing his mentor and using his life’s work as a springboard, then joining a nefarious group of evil-aligned magic users known as the Red Wizards of Thay, a group that also features prominently in the D&D film. He’s also an old hand at raising armies – including armies of the undead – to attempt to take over areas of the material world.

Of course please don’t get it this especially red-robed wizards who get confused with D&Ds other wizards dressed in red. Known as the Order of the Red Robes, these ladies and gentlemen hail from the world of Krynn – and an entirely different environment known as the Dragonlance.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will be in cinemas from March 31st.
