The first preview cards for the new Magic: The Gathering D&D crossover set

Magic the GatheringThe first crossover set of Dungeons & Dragons maps was a hit and became one of Wizards of the Coast best-selling summer releases of all time. Now the Hasbro subsidiary is going to the fountain again Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate. The new set debuted Thursday on Twitch; Here’s what we learned, plus a look at the first preview cards.

While Battle for Baldur’s Gate

focuses on the Commander format – the popular 100-card multiplayer mode also known as Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH) – and will also be draftable. Dice that debuted with Adventures in the forgotten realms, will return with the new set. The popular retro line drawing style of Adventures in the forgotten realmsreminiscent of the classic from D&D Monster Manual, will come back too. It applies to both spells in this new set and creatures.

In a nod to falling COVID infection rates here in the United States, CommandFest – a series of face-to-face and online events – will return in 2022. Fans should expect more details in the coming months.

For fans of the online game, you know that Battle for Baldur’s Gate will be there too Magic: The Gathering – Arena. Details were sparse, but Wizards tells Polygon that arena

contains some maps from Battle for Baldur’s Gate this works well for one-on-one play. Other maps will be rebalanced specifically for Arena. The digital version of the set will also include some unique cards.

Wizards will host a public debut for Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate online May 16. Preview cards will be available in multiple outlets from this date through May 20th, with Commander Deck previews running May 23rd through May 26th. Pre-release weekend will be in stores June 3-6, with a physical release planned for June 10.
