The film adaptation of the horror game franchise Five nights at Freddy’s is just a few months away from debuting on October 27th, and like many video game movies, it has been in production since at least 2015. Now with Jason Blum (The purge, Splits, M3GAN) produced it, it finally has a release date, though getting there hasn’t been an easy one. According to a new interview, Blum was “laughed at” for taking on the project.

In 2015, it was announced that Warner Bros. Pictures would bring the franchise to theaters via a film adaptation, but initial efforts failed. Eventually, the IP ended up at Universal Pictures, with Emma Tammi and Jason Blum taking on the roles of director and producer, respectively.

Speak with IGNthought producer Jason Blum about the difficult task Five nights at Freddy’s to the big screen. Blum said after the film struggled to gain traction early on, there was a sense that it was a lost cause.
“Everyone said we could never finish the movie,” Blum said IGN“also internally at my company, by the way.” But Blum wasn’t one to shy away from a challenge and pushed on, even when people joked about the film’s prospects:
“I’ve been laughed at for chasing that, that thing that could never happen that always kindles a fire in me to say, ‘I bet I can do this.'”

Blum also reflected on what it’s been like working with Scott Cawthon over the last few years. He says he’s “a really, really special person, a really creative person, probably more creative than he gives himself credit for in some ways.” Perfecting the film’s aesthetics wasn’t an easy task, but the end product suits Blum very dear. “We finally found it,” he said, “and we finally made the film […] As you can hear from my voice, I’m extremely proud of the film we made together.”
