At a time when Layoffs are becoming rampant through the video game industry and it feels like every studio you like posts a huge wall of text on social media to deliver bad news, Wilderness myth Developer Worldwalker Games has somewhat bucked the trend. The team behind the 2021 tactical RPG has announced that the game will no longer be actively developed after the release of the last new content and that Worldwalker Games will therefore go into “hibernation”.
On May 29, studio co-owner Nate Austin released a statement to the officially Wilderness myth
I only played a little Wilderness mythbut it was enough to know that the game is something special. In it, you create multiple characters for what is essentially a D&D campaign that changes dramatically depending on your choices and relationships. The writing is excellent and the fact that it reacts to your choices makes that all the more impressive as the narrative is so clear regardless of which path you choose. In addition to the narrative advancements, it has some really cool twists on fantasy combat, such as a magic system that pretty much makes your mages the avatarControl elements based on their environment rather than simply summoning fire spells out of thin air. It’s a cool element of worldbuilding, but it also has a direct impact on how you handle combat encounters. Wilderness myth
My respect for the game was what turned my stomach when I saw a large wall of text shared on Worldwaker’s social media, because that is the video game industry’s typical way of delivering bad news. Who among us doesn’t remember where we were when we saw the Cyberpunk2077 yellow text wall? The format has become so complicated that Ninja Theory does not even have a general thanks to the fans When Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II launched without people getting scared for the studio. Although Worldwalker’s announcement means the studio isn’t doing anything right now, it also means there’s still a future to look forward to one day. With so much bad news coming out of the video game industry in 2024, I’ll take some comfort in that and maybe boot up Wilderness myth for another campaign tonight.
