A Dunsparce crying a single, large tear.

With Pokemon scarlet and violet now about as extensively spoiled as a pre-release game can be, especially after yesterday’s 22.5-hour live stream of the game, people are starting to dive into some of the major spoilers that you might not be asking about ahead of release. Most of these we avoid listening to ourselves, let alone telling you, but one is too good to miss.

Spoiler alert.

Above GamesRadar, Dunsparce, the 1999 Gen 2 Pokemon, finally gets its first evolution. And it’s a beautiful piece of trolling by the looks of it.

Mostly because the joke – and patience, Dunsparce Stans – is completely harmless. With 23 Years old, Dunsparce was one of them PokemonThe most unloved monsters. Poor Normal-type “land snake-type Pokemon” looks dull, kind of a wriggling bug thing that you’d wonder if it needs cleaning when you see it in a pond. It has vestigial wings that allow it to barely hover, as if mocking the beast with the ever-denied possibility of flight. It has eyes, but it cannot open them. The poor bastard thing lives his miserable life in the Diglett Tunnels and never evolves out of or into anything. Until now!

People of Earth, let me introduce you: Dudunsparce!

That’s really what it says; They simply added a ‘du’ to the beginning of the name. This naming alone is enough The monster sounds like a mockery, like, moron. But it gets a lot better/worse than that. If you’re wondering what’s actually different here, then you’ve got what people are fixated on right now. Dudunsparce is just a slightly longer dunsparce.

Seriously, at first glance you won’t notice any difference. If you look again, you’ll see that it now has four segments instead of two, and sports an extra pair of nearly pointless wings on its back. Oh, and has a third spike on his no-mouth and a blue cap on his drill tail.

It’s like they’re thinking, “People have been begging for decades for Dunsparce to finally get his Caterpie-like transformation. Let’s… let’s completely ruin this for her.”

Granted, it’s possible they never intended this to be a troll at all. Slightly incremental developments aren’t uncommon, but there’s a reason people were expecting a little more here. Weedle transforms into Beedrill. Larvitar evolves into Tyranitar. Magikarp becomes the all-powerful Gyrados. But Dunsparce? It gets Dudunsparce. IIt’s the same, but just a little bit more of it. And let’s face it, the best thing you could ever hope for is Dududunsparce.
