In an interview with IGN just before The Game AwardsAonuma, accompanied by director Hidemaro Fujibayashi, spoke about Zelda’s role in Tears of the Kingdom. So Link is always the main character in a series that isn’t named after him IGN asked the two developers what it was all about and whether Zelda would ever be playable. None of the game makers gave a clear answer, instead leaving the answer relatively ambiguous. However, Aonuma said that “maybe” one day in the future you will be able to play as a princess instead of just rescuing the princess.

“Yeah, it’s interesting when you think about the name of the series, The Legend of Zelda, but Link is always the main character,” Aonuma said. “And Link was the main character, and Zelda was always involved, and they have a relationship and their own rules in each of the games. But it’s true, I think there’s always room to think about things like that and Zelda’s role. And there might be an opportunity for something like that in the future.”
Zelda plays a slightly larger role in Tears of the Kingdom as in Breath of the Wild. Without giving too much away, the descendant of the Hylian goddess is present with Link in some capacity for the most part, although her presence is particularly felt towards the end of the game. She has some striking moves in both cases Hyrule warriors And Super Smash Bros., and her alter ego is the badass Kunoichi Sheik. (She is also the star of Zelda’s Adventure for the CD-i But the less said about it, the better.) Whatever a playable Zelda looks like in the future, it could be a welcome change from Link’s brooding, quiet stoicism.

Tears of the Kingdom has been a huge success for Nintendo since its release on May 12th. The company announced this in November 2023 The game has sold almost 20 million copies in just four short months. (That number is probably much higher now.) And at the Game Awards, the open-world game was nominated for numerous trophies, including Game of the Year (which went to…). Baldur’s Gate 3), but emerged as the winner of the “Best Action/Adventure” award. Zelda may not be playable – at least not yet – but her games run very well.
