Ubisoft has ended development of The Heartland Division, the free-to-play game set in the universe of Tom Clancy’s The Division, the company announced on Wednesday. The game was announced in 2021. The publisher said it would redirect resources elsewhere, particularly to XDefiant and the Rainbow Six franchise.
The Heartland Division is set in the wake of a devastating pandemic that devastated the fictional flyover town of Silver Creek. In the multiplayer game developed by Red Storm Entertainment, players must contend with an ever-changing contamination, new survival obligations and a deadly night-time cycle in the free-to-play spin-off of The Division franchise. In recent months, several AAA publishers and studios have canceled their live service games in development. This also includes the long development The Last of Us online
Despite it, The Heartland DivisionThe cancellation of is notable considering the publisher’s commitment to problematic projects such as Skull and bones – which had a decade-long development cycle – and that Prince of Persia: Sands of Time New edition. Ubisoft has two other announced The Division projects in the works: The Division’s Resurgencea free multiplayer third-person shooter mobile game, and The Division 3Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft confirmed was in the works last September.
The Heartland Division is one of many cancellations that Ubisoft has confirmed in recent years. In 2023, the company also canceled three unannounced titles Immortals Fenyx Rising 2. The year before, four projects in development that were not publicly announced were canceled.
Ubisoft’s lineup for next year now includes Assassin’s Creed Shadows (officially announced today), Rainbow Six Mobile, Star Wars Outlaws, The Division’s ResurgenceAnd XDefiant.
