BioWare has given some brief insights into Dragon Age: The Veilguard‘S action-oriented combat in the last two months, but all we have seen so far are some early encounters with the Rogue class and some striking spells for the magicianNow the studio is working on the details of The Veil Guardian‘s fight with a 10-minute presentation focusing on the warrior class.
The trailer shows every step as you prepare your version of the protagonist Rook for the enemies he will face as he tries to prevent another world-destroying catastrophe in the Dragon Age Universe. This also includes the assignment of skills, as you have to create a selection of attacks, similar to Mass Effect: Andromeda rather than having a giant wheel to choose from like in previous games, navigating through the skill tree and specializations and selecting equipment that will be effective against enemies you know you’ll encounter on a given mission. The presentation also shows the party selection screen – with my husband’s Davrin and Lucanis– so you can also see how party members interact on the battlefield.
The encounter shown in the trailer involves fighting Darkspawn enemies, which serves to showcase the enemies’ elemental weaknesses. The Warrior class allows you to equip your weapons with elemental affinities such as a passive fire trait, meaning you won’t be left without options for elemental damage if there’s no mage in your party. The video also shows companion commands, party synergies, and some stats and debuffs to be aware of. The trailer rounds things out by showcasing primers and detonators, which again feels very Mass effect-y in terms of one character that applies a status effect to enemies and another that follows and deals explosive damage. In addition to two companions that you only control via commandsit definitely feels like many of the design philosophies of the science fiction series have found their way Dragon Age.
Overall, the game is, despite its action-heavy focus, The Veil Guardian seems to have a lot under the hood. Whether that is enough for people who tactical nature of Dragon Age: Origins remains to be seen, but it still looks like many systems are running in real time. Check out the full presentation below:
