Each year, the tabletop RPG community votes on a collection of the best TTRPGs and other products to showcase at Gen Con. The Ennie Awards allow games and other products to be nominated in a variety of categories, including outstanding art direction, design mechanics, writing, and more.
If you’re excited to try out some of these new titles, you’ll be happy to hear that many of the winners unveiled at Gen Con 2024 are already available for purchase.
Below you will find links to all first and second place winners in all relevant categories of this year’s Ennie Awards.
Product of the Year
This category represents the overall fan favorite that will be presented at Gen Con 2024. This year, this award belongs to Shadowdark roleplaying game, which can be purchased directly from The Arcane Library in both PDF And Hardback edition Formats. Second place went to inferior, Available at DriveThruRPG as PDF for $11.90.
Best Adventure – Short Form / Long Form
This year, the gold medal for the best short adventure went to the best seeds and one-shots. Eat the Reich
The award for the best long-format adventure goes to works with great campaign ideas. This year, this award goes to Delta Green: God’s Teethwhile the runner-up Call from Cthulu: Alone against the static took home silver.
Best tool/accessory (digital / non-digital)
Extra little things can make a campaign or setting seem more realistic. In this category you will find the best physical and digital accessories that give your game that little extra. First place in the digital category goes to LegendKeeperwhich is available as a free trial but offers monthly subscriptions for $7.50. Second place goes to Witch Scroll 2E, a hex-based world-building tool that is available for free but offers additional benefits to Patreon subscribers for $2.50 a month.
In terms of physical accessories, first place went to the luxurious Arkham Investigator Walleta $100 prop set designed for Call of Cthulu. Second place goes to the Hexcrawl Toolbox.
Best Art (Cover)
You can’t always judge a book by its cover, but sometimes you can. This year, the best cover belongs Eat the Reichwith illustrations by the artist Will Kirk by. Chorus: A magical year
Best Art (Interior Design)
Eat the Reich also won first place for interior illustration. But UVG2E took second place with illustrations by designer Luka Rejc.
Best cartography
As warrior poet Karen O once said:cardsthey don’t love you like I love you.” Every year, Gen Con awards the Best Cartography prize to games that use outstanding art and technology to map out the topography of a particular environment. This year, first place went to Dragonbane Core SetAvailable at Amazon And Modiphius for around 44 dollars. The extension for the Alien RPG, Creating better worldscame second.
Best family game
The Gold Award for Best Family Game at Gen Con 2024 goes to BREAK!! Pen & Paper Role Playing
Best game
The Best Game category is all about RPGs that are instantly playable and combine the best graphics, text and rules under one roof. This year, the award goes to Shadowdark RPGwhile Inferior took second place.
Best layout and design
Shadowdark RPG once again took home the gold medal for layout and design at Gen Con 2024. However, the silver medal goes to CBR+PNK: Extendedavailable as Deluxe, $30 Box Set from the publisher or as PDF for 10 USD from itch.io.
Best Monster/Opponent
The Best Monster/Enemy category is awarded exclusively to books filled with beasts, villains, and other nightmares that give XP. The 2024 Gold Medal in this category went to Warhammer 40,000 Wrath & Glory Threat Assessment Xenos And Monsterlike.
Best production values
The devil really is in the details. The Best Production Values category recognizes attention to detail and quality. This year, first and second place correspond to the recipients of the best physical accessories of 2024. The Arkham Investigator Wallet and that Hexcrawl Toolbox.
Best RPG-related product
This category is not necessarily awarded to games, but to products inspired by TTRPGs and their communities. This year, first place goes to the lengthy but extremely helpful GM text, So you want to become a game master: Everything you need to start your tabletop adventure for Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, and other systems. Second place in this category went to the KOBOLD Roleplaying Guide.
Best rules
Occasionally, the Best Rules award is described as the “crispest game,” like perfectly meshed gears turning with Swiss precision. The award is given to games that demonstrate outstanding mechanical design. This year Shadowdark RPG took the gold and the Pathfinder Player Core Set came second.
Best setting
Two clear favorites of Gen Con 2024 won awards for Best Setting as they fleshed out their respective worlds with a powerful combination of rich text and illustrations. This year, first place went to Pathfinder Lost Omens: Tian Xia World Guide, and took second place Valley of Flowers.
Best addition
Creating better worldsthe extension for the Alien role-playing game, took first place for the best additional content of 2024, while The Griffon’s Saddlebag: Book Two took second place.
Best Writing
This category recognizes games with the best prose and other descriptive texts. The gold medalist, Call of Cthulhu: Alone against the static is available at Amazon or Chaosium in print for $29.99 or at Chaosium for $15 PDF. Second Cloud Empress: Land of the Cicadas, a fantasy campaign setting for the Mothership RPG system, Available at DriveThruRPG as PDF for $11.99.
Best Free Game/Product
The open source nature of tabletop games is one of their greatest strengths, as evidenced by the abundance of free tools, systems, and campaigns available online. This award recognizes the best things you can use to spice up your next campaign for free. While they all deserve a gold medal in my book, first place went to Rivers of London: The domestic, and took second place Level 1: The free indie RPG anthology for RPG Day 2023.
