World of Warcraft: Dragonflight skips the alternate character grind

To play World of Warcraft gives a player a lot of choices and quests, which is fantastic in theory. However, with the game’s many expansions, the formula occasionally doesn’t work. Some people like to focus entirely on the development of their lead role and keep a character of their choice up to date with all the latest content. Other people prefer to have a full set of characters to play as. These players will likely be happy with the approach Blizzard is taking in the next expansion, dragonflight. According to Game Director Ion Hazzikostas, almost all progression in the Dragon Islands will be account-wide.

Hazzikostas and lead actor Steve Danuser responded Fan questions about the upcoming expansion in a Twitter section this Wednesday. One of the earliest answers had to do with account-wide progression for systems like reputation, factions, and the upcoming Dragon Ride skill. Hazzikostas said “almost everything” would extend to all the alts a player has on their account, with the exception of individual quest rewards and other things that represent a character’s personal journey. Also, a few features are skipped shadowlands. For example, once a character completes the Dragon Isles narrative story, the alternate players decide whether to play through the same linear campaign or jump straight to end-game activities to gain experience.

This is fascinating news for those with plenty of alternatives, as it means skipping many of the grinds that have plagued them shadowlands expansion early. Players complained that they had to grind their Renown, Conduits, and Covenant campaigns to get all the new goodies. This system would allow players to abandon a character and try something new. Players can switch later in the expansion without penalty to try out the Dractyr Evoker, or give a new class a spin on a whim.

dragonflight currently has no release date.
