As of Tuesday, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has lost six rounds of voting to become the next House Speaker in Congress. Those humiliating defeats have left the US government legislature in limbo and even made a bored congressman get full Leeroy Jenkins on the floor of the house while the worst parts of the Republican party eat it alive.
In case you weren’t following, a better-than-expected performance by the Democrats in last November’s midterm elections left the Republicans with a slim majority in the House of Representatives. While McCarthy had maneuvered around the speaker’s role as a former minority leader, he failed to garner support from Trump barnacles like Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.). That was more than a dozen votes short of placing him third in the presidency, but it hasn’t stopped him from showing his butt in vote after vote.
During one of those rounds just after noon today, Rep. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.) decided to have a little fun while casting his ballot by naming Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) Leeroy-style exclaimed Jenkins the infamous World of Warcraft
Huffman, 58, later confirmed this in a tweet. “Yes, I said what I said,” he wrote, apparently pleased with himself. “If Republicans get us to endure this repeated self-flagellation, we might as well make it unforgettable.”
For anyone unfamiliar with Leeroy Jenkins, which probably encompasses most members of Gen Z at this point, it was one of the earliest viral memes on the internet. A group of Impressive
At this rate, it also doesn’t seem likely that Republicans will be able to agree on a new leader tomorrow. Plenty of time for someone to sing the whole thing Neon Genesis Evangelion song in the opening credits.
