Kitty Song Covey – the eponymous lead role of XO, kitty And The The messiest bisexual teen on Netflix is back and I'm so excited to see what the hell she's up to this season because the first season was so deliciously over the top.
The series is technically a spin-off of the Netflix film trilogy “To All the Boys,” which in turn is based on a series of young adult romance novels by Jenny Han. Compared to the more down-to-earth “To All the Boys” films XO, kitty is absolutely out of control – in the best possible way.
[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for season 1 of XO, Kitty.]
It's a teen drama in which every plot point is taken to the most ridiculous extreme. It's also remarkably chaste: Nothing on screen goes beyond a slightly heated kiss, “bitch” and “ass” are the strongest swear words uttered, and underage drinking has little to no involvement. In fact, there was an entire storyline in the first season about how underage drinking was a big no-no in South Korea. This super dramatic teen show isn't about sex and drugs euphoria; it's like High School Musical: The Musical: The Seriesbut with one much more soap opera fare. Because the show doesn't rely on the inherent shock that comes with heavier subject matter, it has to do everything that way does bigger and more dramatic than was probably necessary. The result is a show so dramatic that it almost becomes silly. That's a good thing.
The first season began as Kitty (Anna Cathcart), the younger sister of To all the boys Lead actress Lara Jean attends an international school in Korea and follows in her late mother's footsteps. She is determined to get in touch with her mother, but soon discovers a dark and tangled web in her mother's past, which also implicates the headmaster and the strictest teacher. Kitty, who describes herself as someone who pursues what she wants without dedication, will stop at nothing to solve this mystery – including breaking into hospitals to steal records and interfering in her teachers' personal lives. This allows for the kind of shenanigans that teen soaps were designed for, without bending for justification; Kitty is exactly like that The And the sooner you accept it, the more enjoyable the show will be.
Kitty has another reason for taking a year abroad at the Korean Independent School of Seoul (known as KISS because this show just loves being so cute and pushy): her long-distance Korean boyfriend Dae (Choi Min-young). ), goes there. But when she arrives, she finds out that Dae is dating rich socialite Yuri (Gia Kim)! Gasp!
No matter what genre it is, love triangles are a staple of teen series Gilmore Girls To Riverdale. In XO, kittyBut a simple love triangle turns into a multi-headed, vicious love hydra with a million additional complications. Season 1 ended with Kitty's romantic status up in the air, with deliciously promising entanglements for Season 2: she realized she and sweet Dae are better off as friends, she experienced a second awakening at the hands of Yuri (of all people) And In the finale she received a confession of love from an unexpected source. Not only does Kitty have to deal with the chaos of her already pretty hectic dating life, but her options are expanding now that she's catching the eye of girls too.
The family storyline and romantic entanglements don't even scratch the surface of how much drama is packed into the first season's ten half-hour episodes. Kitty is accidentally assigned to the boys' dormitories. She almost fails at school. Each character has their own tortured family drama. And each character simply doesn't know how to act like a decent human being, instead jumping to the most ridiculous conclusions and carrying out the craziest plans. That makes XO, kitty a reliable source of endlessly entertaining drama – anything that can happen on the show will happen. No one is more guilty of this than Kitty, who is a certified human wrecking ball.
When I watched the first season, I was a little taken aback by how over-the-top the series was, especially compared to the original film series. But now that I've accepted that it's a fast-paced ride that hits the gas from the first episode and never lets up, I'm better prepared for Season 2. I can't wait to hold on for dear life and just see what the hell Kitty gets herself into this time.
Both seasons of XO, kitty are now on Netflix.
