Whether you play through endlessly replayable single player campaigns with roguelike mechanics or battle online against other players to dominate online PvP matches, you’ll discover a plethora of challenges, rich mechanics, and customization options. . Here are some tips for defeating your enemies and surviving in the brutal environment of the Mortal Realms.
Carefully consider your positioning
Unit contiguity bonuses will affect armor, damage, and health. Hills, hazards, and other units all affect the outcome of combat. If you step in to attack a squad while standing next to an obstacle, you might find yourself punched in it on the next turn. You can mitigate this by positioning troops to prevent enemies from occupying spaces that would allow that position; it may be worth giving up on a potential attack if it means protecting your hero from death.
Experiment with different synergies of troops, combat gear, and skills
Ranged units like Castigators and Chainghasts can be modified to penetrate armor, increase damage, or set targets on fire. Heavily modified units cost more to deploy, so sometimes it can be worth keeping an empty slot to line them up earlier. Battle after battle, you will discover the weaknesses of the enemy and equip your units with the dangers that await you. Sometimes a simple exchange of skills is enough to make the difference between victory and defeat.
Your economy matters
Power allows you campaign units and divine deeds, but unspent power converts to Aethyr, allowing you to use magical abilities with your troops in the campaign. Set up troops to allow you to capture sources that increase your power and ethereal resources, or engage your hero in an assault by taking advantage of his abilities. These are all choices that will affect the outcome of every fight.
The strongest attacks are as spectacular on the pitch as they are in force
Lord Celestant can summon a mighty Stardrake to the field and strafe a row of enemies, and endless spells like the Purple Sun are both beautiful to look at and explosive in the field. Stormcast Eternals, Nighthaunt, and Maggotkin armies are fantastic to play in every sense of the word. But your most powerful abilities, such as transforming your hero Maggotkin of Nurgle into a large, devastating giant unclean, takes multiple turns, costs a considerable amount of energy, and leaves the unit vulnerable while casting. It’s up to you to choose the best time to summon these powerful techniques while protecting your ally or neutralizing the opponent during this time.
Perseverance pays off
Every run of the campaign will be different – there are hundreds of items to be won both in the campaign, as well as in online multiplayer. Your army, items, and skills all benefit from an investment of time to find more options in the field. Whether you’re battling the toughest encounters of the campaign or taking on talented opponents online, there is more to be gained throughout Storm Ground. On top of that, the campaign is packed with dozens of journals for you to check out – these character-told tales provide a great introduction to the world of Age of Sigmar.
Take full advantage of piercing armor
Some units have armor that protects their health from damage. Without special abilities or powerful attacks, they will be a challenge in battles. Consider equipping your troops with abilities that can break or pass through these protections. Not all of your units are capable of piercing enemy armor as easily as your heroes. Make sure they can cope with it to increase the damage of your support unit. However, armor never fully protects a unit – there’s always a chance an attack will find a weak spot.
Take advantage of caches
Loot and Lore Caches can be found on most battlegrounds, offering additional items and bonuses. They are sometimes hard to reach, but the reward can be worth the risk. It is up to you to decide which unit you want to send to get them. Be careful though – since your opponent can also claim the loot, and the chests disappear at the end of the battle if no one has claimed them. Each cache shines according to the rarity of the items inside, and gives you powerful weapons, armor, abilities, and lore to uncover the secrets of the mortal realms.
Not all actions are immediate
While most attacks deal damage immediately, some skills are delayed. Anticipating your enemies’ next moves will allow you to deal more damage later. Some units, like the Stormcast Castigators, have powerful delayed field attacks. It is often wiser to ambush your opponents by luring them (sometimes even against their will with certain abilities) into your trap. Delayed abilities are a great way to control the pace of a fight if you want to get the most out of it.
Prepare to fight tomorrow in Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Storm Ground on PlayStation 4.
