Baby Steps was revealed for the first time in the world in June 2023, and looking at it first, I did not know what to think. The surprises are rare when you have been playing for over 30 years, but the trailer for revelation left me with perplexed emotions. I was in a mental showdown between: “I have never really seen something like that” and “does this concept really have a leg on?” Well, after about an hour of play, I had ten toes.
The game begins with an exhibition extract. You are an adult by the name of Nate living at home, and without warning, you are thrown into the world of the game. You have learned to walk and make sure that you are from a cave that serves as a tutorial area, then you take the first steps in the open world, with a single goal in mind: go to the mountain in the distance.
At the ends of the earth
It was not a mountain separated by cut scenes and different areas of hub, but a specific geographical objective that I should advance in real time, approaching each stage. This achievement swept me from my feet.
“It started on a much smaller course,” said Bennett Foddy, one of the creators of Baby Steps. “But just as a test, I did a level of 100 meters wide, and it was immediately clear for us that it would make a gameplay much more interesting, involving the strategic search for the route as well as a tactical placement of the feet. And it would surely not be so difficult to make an open world game!”
Step by step
Once the shock of the scope of the world has dissipated, I instantly bypassed the direct route for something more interesting that caught my attention and went to what seemed to be a carousel in the distance. Since there is no card or waypoint here, where you are going to depend on you as a player. With campfires in the distance serving as markers for the “real” direction to which you should head. While I crossed the mud, the puddles, the sticks and the stones, the characteristics of the DualSense controller began to shine, because each texture was encountered with the appropriate feeling and the strangely satisfactory crunch of the earth and other materials under my feet.
“There is a advanced experimental music system that works in synchronization with The Walking Sim,” said Foddy. “I think we have also woven a fairly stimulating story from the Nate's situation. And the game is full of other surprises. ”
Since I crossed the previous tutorial and I started to make tracks through a bizarre and apparently sorry carnival, I saw a mysterious object at the top of the carousel, which led me to my first challenge: to conquer the medium – at medium -high rims and slippery surfaces.
The object called me as a butterfly with a flame, and I spent a little time understanding how to raise my knees high enough for a step large enough to clean the edge and the width of a step to take to finish the movement without falling. Although it was only a minute or two, I felt like I won a difficult boss battle. What was waiting for me at the top of the spiral slope? A hat.
A simple hat, yes, but which has surprises, which I let you discover for yourself. Baby Steps has dozens and dozens of collects to find, and the goal they serve is part of the trip. Although none of them will help you walk better – it's always in your hands (or rather, feet).
But don't worry – the developers assured me that the game is something to appreciate for players of all levels. It is the beauty of the open world. If you fail or fall, you can always go to another point of interest or fall on the unexpected.
“I had a great time in the past to get out of difficult matches and not keep too far from players,” said Foddy. “But we tried strong enough to make a game that looks difficult but that plays cold enough. We have probably made things too easy.”
Break the leg
There are no control points, you can't die and no quick trip. The only change is your ability to walk straight and the field. Although there is a story and a final end to the story, you can explore and see what you can find after the credit bearing.
Like many open world games, how ready you are learning about the world and Nate will depend on the player. I saw Nate as nothing more than a vehicle to live the world, but after a few discoveries and a cryptic note or two, my desire to discover the who, what, where, when and why of her strange situation became my first priority.
Although my time was brief, it was still enough to meet a handful of support characters, some of which can be completely missed. There was always a new thread to follow and the proverbial / literal mountain to climb. I asked the team if Nate's trip had a larger subtext, or if he was just a guy with a goal to be completed.
“Everyone has days when they feel a little annoying,” said Foddy. “A little clumsy, perhaps a little lost and confused. I think we can all tell ourselves a little. But as for his glutes, it is a power that I could only dream of having.”
I did not expect to be so in love with a game where every step you take can be difficult, but I was. I was ready to spend ten minutes or an hour to put this article slightly out of reach or to know what this structure was out of space in the distance. Although I have no idea what exists in a baby, I can't wait to see where my feet will lead me.
