This weekend, Bungie revealed the gameplay fueled by marathon in the world. The studio, celebrated for its first -person shooting game and its constantly expanding gameplay, ventures into the kind of shooter's extraction when the game is launched on September 23. Marathon The premise is simple and attractive: load your runner with precious equipment, compete with other players to secure more loot and risk trying to extract with all goods.

I had the opportunity to make up for the director of the Marathon game, Joe Ziegler, Hot of the heels of this revelation, plunging more deep into the details around the next Bungie match. We cover a lot of ground, including the approach of Bungie in a new genre, explaining the power of the PS5, the daring art style of the game, and more.

Interview with the marathon developer: Bungie shares more on his extraction FPS action

Tim Turi: Congratulations on the great revelation of Gameplay! How and the team do you feel after the event?

Joe Ziegler: It's quite exciting. The term that I use a lot is “quoted by the nerve”. It is a love work on which we have been working for a few years now, and it certainly comes with the passion we have poured there, iterant with our audience, and this desire to produce something incredible to play and to see.

Touching the hands of real players for the first time is exciting, because we do it to excite them and entertain them in an incredible way, but also the nervous excavation. You know, you question a lot of decisions you have made. You really hope that all the things you have thought of are really what the players care about. And we have the impression that we are here, but we are really delighted to see what the players have to say.

During the development of the marathon, were there any specific moments or experiences that made the Bungie team realized that it was on something special?

Many of them are these unpredictable moments. Moments when you thought that it was going to happen, but another thing happened. In our game, you travel to this mysterious world where the danger could hide at every street corner. Sometimes you turn a corner and you are face to face with the United Earth Space Council (UESC), these really brutal and dangerous opponents inside our game. Or sometimes, you simply cross the card and the balls whistling from another crew that saw you. And some of these moments become extremely exciting, because you do not think you are going to do it, and you turn the tables, or you are barely doing, and you find your way to the exfil. When you go out, you simply tremble with an impressive intensity that you will remember for a long time.

What is the background behind the name “Marathon?”

In the original game (1994), “Marathon” is the name of the ship of the colony sent from the Earth by the UESC. They sent it beyond the scope of our solar system to establish the first colony of a system called Tau Ceti. And therefore the EUSC marathon is a kind of bizarre ship integrated into an asteroid -shaped moon, then sent to make a long trip. … If you had to make me guess, I suppose that the “marathon” refers to the fact that it was a 500 -year trip and was an appropriate name for a very, very long travel commitment.

We use the name of the marathon [for this new 2025 game] Due to the inheritance of the IP. We take many of these familiar IP elements, the EUSC marathon Also ship and highlight it modern times. We reinterpret a lot of things, but there are also a lot of familiar elements, like the ship and the Tau ceti, that I think that fans of the past will really appreciate seeing.

Bungie is famous for her perfect shooting game. How are you going to be faithful to this inheritance while making Marathon's FPS action looks like its own thing?

This comes largely from the nature of the game and the types of decisions you want players to make and how you want them to make these decisions. This game is a matter of survival. And in survival style games, a large part of the pressure is on you to manage resources, be adaptive and be aware of the situation. What we do with our canons and our systems is that we take a lot from this familiar action base that players really appreciate, and we add intense survival layers on top. For example, you do not regenerate health automatically very quickly, but you have consumables that help you cure. Part of this is to create moments when you make decisions to go to battle or fall back. You have to think about the resources you carry.

Do you have a message for all curious players in extraction shooters, but are a bit nervous or intimidated by risk / reward?

I would certainly say that this game is difficult and intense, but it is very rewarding. As you learn it, you will feel about survival skills that you may not have experienced before, which are starting to make you feel masterful. We have also designed this game to also feel natural about the controllers. There are a lot of PC extraction shooters where the mouse and the keyboard are a little more common, and therefore by designing this, what we are trying to do is to get the interface and the gameplay out so that you can play it naturally. We want you to focus on adapting and learning these survival skills to carry out memorable races.

Obviously, players risk their precious charges in a given match. Can you tell us about the persistent elements of progression?

We want to make sure that players feel like they have something for their time spent in every match. Part of this will be based on an experience. For example, level your runner level in a given season. Part of this will be linked to upgrades provided by the factions. When you collect materials or get currency, you can increase some of your global statistics. So you could get a little more endurance, or maybe you might loot boxes a little faster. Party will also increase the options you need to buy in an articles in -play called Black Market. You can use the motto you collect in the game to buy different weapons, implants and upgrades depending on what you unlock inside this upgrade tree. So when you play the game, you will see a lot of your options develop.

In what ways do Bungie take advantage of PlayStation 5 technology for marathon?

We definitely have haptic support for [DualSense wireless controllers]Which is quite fun when you enter some of these rifles and you feel comments on your fingers. We also support the 3D Tempest audio engine, so you will hear a lot of immersive audio.

In addition, a large part of the PS5 rendering technology, and in particular on the PS5 Pro, is really great. We therefore provide an impressive use of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) and additional support in terms of scaling and resolution. So, if you have a PS5 or PS5 Pro, you will be pleasantly surprised by the way we deliver the console.

Interview with the marathon developer: Bungie shares more on his extraction FPS action

The artistic style of marathon does not look like anything else right now. Can you guide us through what makes him so striking and unique?

Our aesthetics are extremely inspired by graphic design and many modern signs of product design. But I think what really distinguishes us is every time I look at a [Marathon] Image, I say: “I think I understand it” or “I think I don't like … but I really like it.” There is something really attractive about the visuals that seem so daring and graphic that something you would see on paper but also pulled on the screen and mixed with this technological fitness of science fiction. This, and also in a very organic context and the contrast of all these things really appear.

It is a mixture that I do not think I have seen much before, and we are really excited by that, because it creates all these visual contrasts and conflicts that go together to help the tone of the game, which really concerns paranoia. This is a question of intensity. It is a question of not knowing the truth you know, of trying to find it and of being constantly wrapped in a rabbit hole of information. You don't know what is true or false. So all these things are also very good through the artistic style.

Is there anything else you would like to make sure that the PlayStation public takes away from this great revelation?

If you are a person who really likes to have survival experiences. If you are a person who really likes to test your courage with other players inside this space to try to do the same. And if you are a player who really wants, just to make an exciting race which you never know the result … I think it will be a game for you. Especially because we focused so much on the realization of this experience which translates very well on the platforms. I am particularly excited to see the players of PlayStation enter and discover the genre and our offer inside. We have paid a lot of passion and love in [Marathon]And we played it a lot, and we also played a lot for fun. We are therefore delighted to make them join our community, to show ourselves what is good and to show us how good they can be.
