It seems that despite rumors of multiple Cyberpunk 2077 expansions on the way, CD Projekt Red only has plans for Phantom Liberty at the moment.
Phantom Liberty, a huge story expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, was finally revealed yesterday in a live stream hosted by CD Projekt Red, where the developer gave plenty of details about the future of its dystopian RPG. Cyberpunk 2077 fans knew an expansion was coming for the game, but the reveal dates for that DLC were pushed back, along with the release period.
As shown in the trailer for Phantom Liberty, the Cyberpunk 2077 expansion has a release date of sometime in 2023. It will feature a story that takes place before the end of the main Cyberpunk 2077 narrative, with V making some sort of deal. with a mysterious figure. Not much else is known about what the expansion will look like, but with a vague release date of 2023, there’s plenty of time to tell what new content is coming to Cyberpunk 2077.
However, it appears that CD Projekt Red is not planning any further expansions after Phantom Liberty. As seen in the YouTube comments of the DLC trailer, the Cyberpunk 2077 channel responded to a fan hoping to see more expansions in the future by commenting “As for the future, Phantom Liberty is the only expansion planned for Cyberpunk 2077.” This suggests that CD Projekt Red could be planning Phantom Liberty as the first and last expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, meaning no more major content updates in the future.
This news will likely disappoint many, especially those who played the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions for CD Projekt Red’s previous title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This may have led fans to believe that Cyberpunk 2077 would follow a similar DLC pattern, but it sounds like CD Projekt Red may have other ideas. This doesn’t necessarily confirm that Cyberpunk 2077 will only get one expansion, as plans could change in the future. What it does mean, however, is that players won’t be getting another big DLC for some time after the release of Phantom Liberty.
In addition to the Phantom Liberty confirmation, CD Projekt Red revealed plenty of other content for Cyberpunk 2077 in version 1.6, its most recent update. There will be tie-ins to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, including series protagonist David Martinez as a playable character. Additionally, a transmogrification system is finally being added, allowing players to walk around Night City in style without sacrificing stats.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Phantom Liberty will be released in 2023.
