A tweet from Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, has become the focus of discussion for the gaming community this morning. The tweet has all the ingredients, an already controversial author, good news, bad news and a scapegoat. According to Pitchford, Borderlands 3 will receive a cross-play patch on all platforms except Sony.
In the same tweet, it is the decision of the publisher, 2K Games, that there will be no cross-play on PS5 and PS4. Despite Pitchford pointing to his own bosses, the community has taken it on Sony in thinking that the real reason behind this incomplete crossover game is that Sony prefers not to share spaces with Xbox and Nintendo.
Controversy in sight
And gamers certainly have reason to believe that it is all Sony’s fault. In principle, the Japanese company did not want to introduce cross-play and finally gave in in 2020 in some titles such as Fortnite, in addition, the Epic Games and Apple trial revealed documents that made it clear that Sony charged publishers for implementing cross-play.
Good news or bad news first? Good News: An update for Borderlands 3 has been prepared for release that includes full crossplay support across all platforms. Bad News: For certification, we have been required by the publisher to remove crossplay support for PlayStation consoles.

In this way, it remains up to the air if Sony refused to be part of the cross-play in Borderlands, if it demanded a payment that 2K did not want to pay or if 2K directly ignored the Sony platforms for reasons that we do not know. Pitchford has a reputation for being a wayward, so we’re also not ruling out that the Gearbox CEO posted this simply to watch the world burn.
In any case, Borderlands 3, one of the most popular shooters of 2019, will be able to bring together players from PC, macOS (Epic and Steam), Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S and Google Stadia when the patch is released for free. It’s a big step for the game that is based on multiplayer and a setback for Sony.
