The streaming service Crunchyroll surpassed a personal mark on Tuesday with 5 million paid subscribers and more than 120 million registered users.
The news comes just 6 months after it was announced that the platform had reached 4 million subscribers, a brand that ensured its acquisition by Sony.
However, AT & T’s sale has been unable to move forward as the Justice Department employed an antitrust review of the acquisition and the company has only grown since then.
Faced with the overcoming of reaching a new rung, the company’s general manager, Joanne Waage, pointed out that “The tremendous growth of our streaming service is indicative of the growing love for anime and its well-deserved focus on popular culture.”
A new project on the horizon
With such scope and released from the Sony purchase for the moment, the orange service prepares for a new batch of original content from the hand of Zoe Saldana at Cinestar Pictures.
The study will be applied in the animation of a new project under the title of ‘Dark Star Squadron’, with a team of stars made up of Todd Ludy in the script and Zoe Saldana, Cisely Saldana and Mariel Saldana as executive producers.
We cannot forget that Sonia A. Gambaro and Maytal Gilboa will act as producers, creating a team full of diverse women who not only serve as an example for the industry, but also speak to the growth of Crunchyroll in recent years.
“We are delighted to be working with such a talented creative team on the development of ‘Dark Star Squadron,’ a new fantasy adventure series,” added Sarah Victor, Crunchyroll’s Head of Development. “We love working with creators who are passionate about storytelling through anime, and we can’t wait to bring this interstellar epic to fans across the galaxy.”
With Crunchyroll ever reaching higher and a new subscriber record, anything is possible for one of the most popular anime distribution services in the West.
