Tear apart and tear until you're done with everyone
As DOOM Slayer our mission will be to end the hell unleashed on Earth. The doors have opened and the creatures now roam freely around the planet. In our mission we will not only start the crusade to end the demons once and for all, but we will also know something more about the character, his background and all the mystery that surrounds him.
Maybe this is where DOOM Eternal delight fans. Although the cinematics are only a few seconds long, the game includes a gigantic codex that we can access to learn everything about the world of DOOM. From demons and the reason for their appearance, what is their past, the different scenarios and the development of events that have been happening long ago. In short, a very complete encyclopedia that deserves a look to understand more about our epic journey.
Of course, unlike with DOOM 2016, Eternal lavishes itself much more in terms of levels. We will find cities, like those already shown by Id Software in videos, completely devastated. Scientific bases and locations that we will not reveal to you so as not to ruin your surprise. The result is a game that practically bases its fun on destroying demons is more than grateful. We will not only want to progress to test our skills, but also to see first-hand that the American studio has prepared us at the stage level, these being a constant surprise throughout the adventure.
A macabre dance in which failure is not forgiven
DOOM Eternal is, as we said, pure and simple gameplay. A macabre dance that raises the levels of addiction, viscerality and frenzy like I have never seen before in the shooter genre. I am not exaggerating if I say that we are before him best generation FPS. DOOM Eternal is pure adrenaline from minute one. Every little mistake is paid, from easy difficulty, to Nightmare, this being a challenge worth trying to make sure how well everything in DOOM Eternal is measured. And believe me, you will want to finish DOOM Eternal not only in Nightmare, being in some of the variants introduced such as Extra Lives Mode or Ultra Nightmare, where dying includes losing absolutely everything.
We have had to wait 7 years to have the best shooter of the generation, DOOM Eternal is long, demanding and replayable, offering an experience that does not give even a second of respite
There are no traps. There are no bugs. There are no impacts that doubt that they shouldn't have made you bite the dust. It is you, a simple human, against hell itself. The precision that has been achieved in the control of the character, the fluidity with which the change of weapons flows or the ‘dash’ make you feel totally in tune with the game. It is difficult to describe the feeling you have at the controls of DOOM Eternal without you having tried it. It is one of those experiences that make it an entertainment product in which everything is created to represent an action-reaction with surgeon's precision. A bad grenade can destroy your next move. Not opting for the flamethrower to recover the shield and yes starting the chainsaw can lead to a few seconds that you would not have wanted. It is a dance in which you, as a player, set the rhythm, and the enemies adjust. Because, that's what you want, right? Be you the lord and master of the dance floor and not them, right?
DOOM Eternal is one fight after another. In my more than 20 hours of duration (Ultraviolence difficulty) I must admit that it was the only game with which I had to stop every hour of play. It requires concentration and a control of the nerves as few have provoked in me, precisely due to the aforementioned factor: it all fits together like a puzzle. Each confrontation in the different combat arenas that make up the levels is a test of skill. A challenge that requires reflexes. And the game itself indicates it from the menu: mastering the arts of combat is crucial.
But in addition to fierce fighting, DOOM Eternal is also exploration. This one is much more satisfying than in the 2016 title. The scenarios are more vertical, which undoubtedly helps us pause for a few minutes to try to discover that path that will lead us to the next collectible or upgrade for the weapon. You may be sick of seeing these kinds of elements in games, but believe me, in DOOM Eternal they are worth it. Not only can we acquire some to decorate our particular base, which by the way is full of winks, but also to obtain a power with which to measure ourselves under equal conditions to enemies.
Again, an exact sign that there is no unfair challenge in Id Software's FPS. Combats scale perfectly on difficulty as we upgrade weapons. It feels natural and exploration is key. There will also be room to increase the power of the suit, or rather, offer us improvements for it. From runes that we can exchange at any time according to our style of play, through passive abilities that will come to us wonderfully with the use of certain objects or when moving around the environment. The introduction of demonic corruption is also an element that has amazed me, for various reasons. It is a bar that we will see in the menu that indicates the number of encounters with demons. As we get past them, it will fill up. We will have bouts of an obligatory nature, obvious, but also other optional ones. Within this category there will be some that we will have to complete in a certain time, but what is really challenging will be the Slayer Gates. These are fights of a very high duration in which we already anticipate you will sweat blood to complete them.
Also mention multiplayer. Gone is that tasteless competitive classic DOOM 2016 character. Battlemode is a bit more original and much more fun. An asymmetric PvP mode in which two players will play specific demons, generally the largest, against a user who will double as DOOM Slayer. It is more than entertaining and ideal to disconnect from the frenzy that is the main Campaign.
What kind of witchcraft is this, Id Software?
DOOM 2016 became a real benchmark for PCs from a few years ago. DOOM Eternal is on the same path. And we are not talking precisely about requiring a demanding team, but rather that the graphic power What it shows on screen is to leave us with our mouths open. In my PC consisting of an Intel i7 9770K CPU, 16GB and a GTX 1070 I have been able to enjoy a rate of 60 images per second totally stable in the highest quality that the game offers, Ultra Nightmare. There are several levels to configure, from Low, through Medium, High, Ultra or Nightmare. The differences between one and the other vary subtly. Particles, effects such as smoke or small details in the lighting. In any case, the options to configure individually are very generous, which makes it fit a wide range of equipment.
In the sound section, the colossal work carried out by Mick Gordon. The good of Mick has marked a soundtrack perhaps less metal, with more electronic arrangements and choirs. There are the thunderous guitars in low tuning, with riffs that will set the pace during the confrontations, but in general the work is even more environmental than in the previous installment. Of course the game also stands out for the grunts of the enemies themselves and the constant sounds of the weapons, forceful to the brim and brand of the house. The dubbing? Well, it is simply limited to compliance.
The really surprising thing about DOOM Eternal visually is the ability to achieve stability that would capture any studio with a present generation. I explain. The game runs on console at 4K resolution (PS4 Pro and Xbox One X) at 60fps. On PCs, as I said, with a modest equipment you can achieve a very high frame rate per second and spectacular quality. It is precisely reaching that mix of pure graphic muscle with the playable show that makes you often stop to think what kind of black magic they have used in Id Software. A show of lights, screams, explosions and blood that enters through the eyes, both for the player and the spectator
The best shooter of the generation. The peak of kinestetica in the genus
There is no more: DOOM Eternal is without a doubt the generation shooter. We have had to wait 7 years to find it, but they take away the dance, as they say. DOOM Eternal is capable of hooking you like few games in the genre have done. We have Destiny, a cool mix of MMO and FPS. If you want something more traditional you have for example the Wolfenstein reboot. Call of Duty will always be there for those who want something of a competitive nature. DOOM Eternal is for everyone, regardless of the genre you like. It is an enjoyment from start to finish. A game that any type of user will find it difficult to say no.
As we mentioned, in the new Id Software everything is absolutely measured. If you fail, it's your fault. If you win, congratulations, you have embroidered it, or not. It is right here, the moment when you think you might not have suffered so much damage to finish off a few demons when your head clicks. And you're already hooked on DOOM Eternal. You will enjoy every game, no matter how brief. You will end up exhausted if you spend several hours in a row. It is just once the mechanics are assimilated, how each weapon is able to face one or the other demon, play with the grenades and the components of your suit, which catches DOOM Eternal. Adding a variety of scenarios, content to stop a train in the form of Milestones, skins and more. That's when you want more and more, wanting to get to the next arena by then… falling defeated. And start again.
