Genshin Impact is now in the depths of its second major content update, Version 1.2, which introduced players to the Dragonspine region. With that said, certain remnants of Version 1.1, such as Geo’s new five-star character Zhongli, are still the subject of heated debate between fans and miHoYo, the game’s developer.
While fans in general were excited about Zhongli’s arrival, many ended up disappointed at the lack of power to his abilities. More specifically, Zhongli appeared to be a relatively insignificant character until players managed to fully unlock his Constellations, a process that requires additional copies of the character (and a lot of silver).
Characters in the game come in all sorts of shapes and forms, and there are different types of five-star characters, but nonetheless, almost all five-star characters in Genshin Impact boast impressive stats and abilities from the start, regardless of the Constellation. The fact that Zhongli was cast as a character who went from low level to God level depending on his Constellation level alarmed fans of the free game and disappointed players who were hoping to team up with the so-called God of Contracts. .
Fortunately, miHoYo responded to the Zhongli controversy. And now, after Zhongli has already been tweaked along with the entirety of Geo Element’s mechanics, the developer decided that fans might have had a good point: Zhongli is still a relatively weak supporting character. As such, miHoYo will further enhance the character’s abilities.

Even from the existing Zhongli perks, miHoYo insisted that Zhongli was meant to be a support character, rather than a simple damage dealer. Of course, fans were quick to point out that Zhongli’s team still didn’t make sense in that case, as it still paled in comparison to the four-star “support” characters. It seems like miHoYo is finally looking at things in a different light, as he has admitted that Zhongli was still insignificant unless players had an existing base of teammates employing “Geo Resonance,” a skill currently solely possessed by his own. Zhongli.
Their new settings can be reviewed in detail in the miHoYo announcement, but they include some interesting visual improvements and another set of improvements for Zhongli’s elemental ability, Dominus Lapidis (Maintain). With Version 1.3, players who are being protected by Zhongli’s Jade Shield will also emit a debuff that reduces the Elemental and Physical RES of surrounding enemies by 20 percent.
The above effect cannot stack, but it does present a significant offensive advantage for players who are protected by a jade shield. And it goes without saying that it’s just nice to see the game’s developers directly acknowledge the specific concerns regarding Zhongli’s strategic value as a five-star character and his relevance as a support character in and out of the game’s co-op. This sets a promising precedent for future characters as it is clear that miHoYo is willing and able to acknowledge and celebrate the thoughts of its fans.
Genshin Impact is available now on the App Store, Google Play, PC, and PS4, and is currently in development for PS5 and Switch.
