The most popular games-as-a-service are celebrating fun Halloween events and very soon we will have the one of the king of modern horror games. But before we offer content from Halloween, Dead by Daylight decided to “terrorize” his players by announcing an alliance to create and sell NFTs of Pinhead, the character from Hellraiser which recently joined the title.
Through a post on the game’s official Twitter account, Behavior Interactive revealed that it was working with the Boss Protocol company to offer the game’s character models as NFTs.
As you can see in the responses to that Tweet and on the game’s subreddit, fans did not react at all well to that announcement.
What are NFTs?
Non-fungible tokens are digital assets that can be bought and sold on the internet. What makes them special is that their certificate of ownership is enhanced and stored through ‘blockchain’ technology in which a group of computers is used to authenticate their veracity. It is the same technology that cryptocurrencies like bitcoin use.
NFTs have been controversial for a number of reasons. For one thing, the ownership certificate does not prevent other people from downloading or sharing the asset, usually an image, video, or animation. Although in theory these can have an interesting use in video games, such as the transfer of NFT objects from one title to another, many consider it to be an economic bubble and many of them are being sold for millions of pesos.
As if that were not enough, the processing required by the computer equipment that authenticates the NFTs has caused many to worry about the exaggerated energy consumption, emissions and damage to the environment that they can have.
The NFTs of Dead By Daylight
Those who decide to purchase the game’s NFTs will get “ownership” of Pinhead’s in-game models, wailing settings, audio files featuring the character’s voice, and the ability to get the DLC from Hellraiser in the game.
In addition to the criticisms of the players, reminiscent of a recent case of Genshin Impact, others criticize that this occurs only months before Clive Barker regains the copyright on Hellraiser. They believe that it may be a simple attempt to get the most out of the character.
In response to the controversy, Behavior Interactive simply said that the sale of NFTs is external to the company and that it does not plan to integrate blockchain technology into the game.
