Fortnite mocks cryptocurrencies with their new 'timed'

Among the new mechanics introduced to the game in Season 2 of Chapter 6 There is a very curious new type of currency that not only serves to get weapons and high level of rarity, but it serves as a kind of parody or even satire of a controversial real topic. We talked about the 'timed' (Dill Bits in English), which are the equivalent of the criticized cryptocurrencies of the real world on the island of Fortnite.

The season that began in February 2025 has as its name 'bandits' and its theme is criminals committing crimes. The main playable novelty are a new type of vaults that we can only enter with specialized tools and from which we draw many gold bars, rare chests and rare coins with the image of a rapper pickler.

These currencies are 'Dill Bits' or timed and if we take them to one of the black markets on the island in this season, we can buy weapons of legendary or mythical rarity. But unlike the bars – which are kept departure to departure – these currencies are lost at the end of the game in which they were achieved.

Viewed like this, they seem special to anything. Another of so many curious mechanics introduced by Epic Games that will be forgotten when a new season arrives. But if we think a little more thorough Fortnite to criticize or at least make fun of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Dogecoin and the 'mememoneas'.

To understand that, we have to have something clear. They have patience that in a few paragraphs we will talk about the game again.

What are cryptocurrencies?

Simplifying things quite a lot, they are a virtual money system supported by decentralized database technology. The most popular of these is Bitcoin, introduced in 2009, and they are assumed that the economy was going to revolutionize because its decentralized management would not depend on the banks.

However, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have turned out to have extremely volatile value. There are very few businesses that accept them and are mainly used to make purchases of illegal objects such as drugs or weapons through the Internet or as a system of supposed investment in which Bitcoin owners do not intend to use them to buy, but to sell when they have a high value.

This caused the emergence of “mememons”, cryptocurrencies that reach the market to attract buyers who believe they will become rich with them. Some are even promoted by famous people or 'influencers' of the Internet, but as soon as they reach some value they are sold in mass causing their collapse and the consequent loss of savings of the majority of people who invested in them.

As I said, this is a very basic and simplified explanation of the subject. If you are interested, I recommend looking for reliable sources about it (Or at least, read wikipedia)

The Timonels of Fortnite

Although the timed are not 'virtual' within the world of Fortnite The way they work reminds the cryptocurrencies:

  • If we do not spend them immediately in a black market in the same game, they lose all their value.
  • They are promoted by a “famous” of dubious reputation: rapper Don Curtido (Big Dill).
  • Don tanned refers to them as “the business of the future”, as many continue to say about real cryptocurrencies.
  • They are used to acquire weapons in illegal markets.
  • Its English name (Dill Bits) can be a reference to Bitcoin.
  • His symbol is clearly inspired by Bitcoin's.

Of course, the same name of the timed makes it clear that they are a scam, a robbery. If we talk to his main promoter, Don tanned, on the crime district roofs, we discover how bad it is when hiding that everything is a plan to enrich himself at the expense of others.

Don Tancido is a parody of the 'gangsta' rappers and modern influencers who use an image of “bad guys” to attract a mainly masculine audience that idolizes them and do what they tell them. In the real world we saw that kind of 'streamers' and youtubers (and Argentine presidents) promote cryptocurrencies, NFTS and other businesses that finally were scams.

Unlike most real world cryptocurrencies, timed or dill coins Fortnite Yes they have something useful by allowing high rar weapons. However, the process of obtaining them from a vault and going to a black market to buy them is more complicated than it needs to be and many players have complained saying that the effort is not worth it.

As the seasons of Fortnitethe almost always ignored game plot advances and changes things on the island. We will see what will happen in the coming weeks with Don tancido and if we find new ways in which the game developers make fun of the 'economic gurus' who believe that cryptocurrencies will make us all rich.
