When Overwatch 2 was officially announced in 2019, one of the main attractions was the announcement that -in addition to its competitive modes- it would have a cooperative or ‘PvE’ mode, but Blizzard announced that this expected game mode was canceled
This is very bad news for players who were still excited to be able to enjoy this mode with their favorite characters. Not only because they might not like to face other players, but because it is assumed that in this one they would focus heavily on developing the story of Overwatch
Why did you cancel the cooperative play or ‘PvE’ mode of Overwatch 2?
In an interview with GameSpotdirector Aaron Keller and executive producer Jared Neuss explained that the cooperative game mode or ‘PvE’ of Overwatch 2 was canceled “for the sake of the game and its live multiplayer component”. They also revealed a new roadmap detailing the future of this title.
Keller and Neuss did not detail the reasons that led to this decision. When pressed, they simply said that “they realized they couldn’t keep doing ‘the other game’. They added that it was better to spend those resources elsewhere in the development of Overwatch 2«.
They also said that this was something very different from what the team was used to doing. It would take them a lot of work to bring it to fruition.
