The massive success of the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck showed that there is still a huge audience for handheld consoles, so it was surprising that both PlayStation and Xbox seemed uninterested in the matter. If the new rumor we are talking about today is true, PlayStation still has an interest in competing with a new portable console, but from the way it would work we cannot say that it would be the successor to PSP and PS Vita but an “accessory” to PS5.
According to an Insider Gaming report, a website usually very accurate with its leaks, Sony is working on a new device codenamed Q Lite. But this laptop, unlike the PSP and Vita, wouldn’t run games by itself but would instead use Remote Play to stream from a PlayStation 5 console.
That means that, if the rumor is true, the new PlayStation handheld console would be more of a specialized accessory for playing PS5 titles remotely. Unlike other devices that use ‘cloud’ or the cloud, this would not use a remote server to run the games, but a PlayStation 5. Rather, it could not be used if you did not have this console.
We must insist that all this is a rumor. Despite Insider Gaming’s good record, we can’t say for sure that the Q Lite will come to fruition until PlayStation confirms its existence. In the meantime, what do you think of the idea of a dedicated PS5 game streaming device? We wait for your comments.
