Sony has announced that will end Blu-ray disc production in February of this year, marking the end of its nearly two-decade career. Unfortunately, it will also mark the end of optical media storage for the company, as there will be no Blu-ray successor model. This end of production announcement also affects MiniDiscs for recording, MD data for recording and MiniDV cassettes.
The company ended production of consumer Blu-ray and optical discs in mid-2024, indicating it would maintain production lines for commercial and corporate customers until it was no longer profitable. However, as the general public prefers streaming services over physical media, commercial sales have quickly become insufficient to sustain Sony's optical media business.
The first prototype Blu-ray disc was released in 2000, designed as a successor to DVD, competing against Toshiba's HD DVD. Both Blu-ray and HD DVD were made available to the public in 2006. Still, the latter lost to the former in the format war due to Sony's association with movie studios and the inclusion of Blu-ray technology. ray on PlayStation 3. Followed by PlayStation 4 and Blu-ray 4K on PS5.
This end of production would make Blu-ray discs and players much more difficult to purchase in retail stores, although they are still widely available on online platforms. Still, the end of Sony's Blu-ray disc production marks the end of an era. This will likely complicate the goal for movie and game collectors of having their media libraries curated. In the case of third-party distributors, they have complete autonomy to continue manufacturing physical discs, so the video game industry is unlikely to be threatened.
